The big surprise is Quevedo, who has never pitched in the US professionally. Another surprise was Robby Scott, who pitched two years in the GCL before jumping to high-A ball.

Quite a bit of talent here. Really think we have something in Henry Owens. Just not sure when he puts it together. When he does, he'll only have 10 starts at that level. Real curious to see Cecchini with added strength too.

What about that Chinese/Taiwanese/Japanese SS we signed last year? Sorry, I forgot his name.

Tzu-Wei Lin is only 19 years old and, seeing as he played in the GCL last year, will likely start this season in Extended Spring Training before reporting to Lowell when their season begins.
Sidenote: shortstop is absolutely stacked in the system right now. Iglesias will be in AAA, Bogaerts will be in AA, Marrero will be in A+, Vinicio will be in A, Lin will be in A-, Raymel Flores ($900K bonus in 2011) will be in the GCL, and Wendell Rijo ($575K bonus in 2012) will be in the DSL.

Anyone else surprised to see Jacobs back at High-A?

Was anyone projecting him to start in AA? A start in AA would have been the surprise. He was just ok last year in Salem, injured for part of the year and it affected for most of the year - and he was young for the league.

If you look at Jacobs' prospect preview ( news.soxprospects.com/2013/03/2013-prospect-previews-jose-vinicio-and.html), he was projected to start in Portland. It wasn't until about midway through ST that it became apparent that he was likely to get a refresher period in Salem. I note that Brandon played with a hamate injury through a significant chunk of the 2012 season. I would expect him in Portland by mid-season if he plays well; there is no one in Portland blocking him.

I see both Jacobs and Coyle as guys who aren't long for Salem. Coyle picked it up in the second half last season and Jacobs, try as he might to say the hammate injury wasn't bothering him, looked like it was affecting him. For Coyle, it's about solidifying those gains.

Wow, didn't realize Lin was that young. Pretty impressive too at the SS spot. That sure is one way to fix an organizational problem. Get numerous prospects at the position that is troubling you and you are bound to get 1 or 2 that work out.

The other reasons to stock short stops is they carry positional value in trades and provide depth at other positions as a short stop can often be moved to second, third, center or a corner OF. As a result, they can turn into good utility players if not a major league starter.
