Oh come on now! Price being included in that deal prevented the return from being better! His actual cost to the team is more than $16 million/year.
But yes, other than Sale this will be Bloom's roster next season. I'm very curious to see what he does on the starting rotation in particular. He's seemed disinclined to make big pitcher signings, but he also hasn't really had the flexibility to do so. So we'll see if that changes.
My point with Price is Bloom dealt him, so he is not a “performance” issue. Not even an injury issue. He *is* a dead money issue. That would be bad if they were trying to stay under the tax and so couldn’t do what they wanted. But since they didn’t, I guess dead money is only a mild inconvenience. Well my point was more that big money pitcher signings are not exactly risk-free investments either.

Well, I guess the value depends on which WAR you use. Price is gone and returned a package of Verdugo, Downs, and Wong, so that is a bit complicated. And again… this was about the injuries. I never said Bloom bears sole responsibility for the staff. But luckily next year DD’s fingerprints will be almost entirely wiped clean, so we will have a much improved staff. Oh come on now! I too am very interested to see what Bloom will do with his payroll flexibility, not the greatest free agent class but enough intriguing hitters to interest me. Looking at the starters, woof it's ugly. Unless he wants to pay DeGrom or Rodon who are it for potential front of the rotation type of guys. I don't see him going after either of them and honestly nor would I want him to unless they could be had for 2 maybe 3 year deals at the most with their injury history. Looking further down the list, I personally think Manaea could be a good add but he doesn't really move the needle all that much. Maybe Mike Clevinger as he's been doing well coming back from TJ. Past that you're looking at the Bloom special type of guys in the mold of Wacha. Taillon, Odorizzi, Kluber, Tyler Anderson, Severino maybe. I've said it a couple of times but I'll say it again, if the 2023 Red Sox are going to be any sort of contender for even just the playoffs Bloom is going to need to get creative and probably hit the trade market and move some of his prospect depth. Otherwise I just don't see them re-tooling in one offseason via only FAs and internal options.

I thought he was overrated even at his peak, and the bill was massive. But I got that it was one of those big splashes that was likely as much a marketing thing as talent acquisition.

With the copious amount of mid-back end depth we'll have next year, as well as the CBT space, I think we just offer 2/90 to any of Degrom, Rodon, Verlander. A rotation of Degrom, Sale, Paxton, Pivetta, Bello/Seabold/Winckowski/Crawford/Walter/Murphy is pretty damn good. That 1 signing would put us around $190 mill which would leave us another $60 mill before the 1st CBT threshold.

I'd expect the Sox to target someone like Chris Bassitt or Jameson Taillon since their major focus in free agency is probably going to be shortstop (Swanson seems like a good target if X's price is too high), plus likely needing to address outfield (Haniger?) and catcher if they aren't able to trade for someone like Sean Murphy. I'd love it if they tried to make a splash for Rodon or Verlander, though.
