Kevin Plawecki hates it. Says it's a long way off from being useful because it's difficult to hear when the crowd is loud and loud enough for the batter to hear when the crowd goes quiet.
If the league would simply put real teeth into punishment of video sign-stealing schemes, it wouldn't be necessary.

I don't know how long this has been in the works, but I did find myself wondering if it isn't damage control. A judge did tell the league to come clean on the Yankees' thievery even as the team obsessed about its (questionable?) reputation. Perhaps this is MLB's way of saying "look what we're doing".
As for the technology, you don't want to bet against it. Tools like this tend to get much better over time.

If they don't want to go that far, though, they can just use Navajo code. Germans never could crack that one.

Or we could just use the very simple and easy tech and never have to hear about another sign stealing witch hunt.

so if this is being deemed "allowable", is it safe to say it is NOT required and will be optional? If so, I wonder if teams will opt one way or the other for the entire team or will it vary pitcher-to-pitcher or catcher-to-catcher?? Seems like it could get pretty messy

Audio seems like a terrible mode to convey this information. Why not haptics? Catcher taps their toe in his shoe and the pitcher feels a buzz on their wrist. Or whatever. This can easily be silent and invisible and it isn't rocket science.
