OK, a little bit more from the Salem game ... Deven Marrero really is a smooth ballplayer, smooth swing, smooth defense ... and he was unlucky to be 1-5, hit the ball hard today with some warning track outs (although his "double" was a single that the rightfielder dived for and let get behind him). Sean Coyle looked dynamic, with a short, quick swing that generated some pop and some speed on the bases. He had a nice game. On the down side, just from one game you can see how Jacobs gets played by pitchers ... he didn't exhibit much control of the strike zone. Keury De La Cruz isn't tall, but he's d*** solid. I was surprised at how thick he is. His swing is pretty violent, but he seemed to keep his head fairly still and his weight balanced pretty well. Cecchini didn't do all that much ...
But, man, still impressed by how overpowering Stroup looked. Just one day, but unless he was having some kind of extra-Wheaties day that's better than he normally is, I can see him making AA this summer. He needs a third pitch to be more than a bullpen prospect, of course, but from just one day, I can't tell for sure that he doesn't have one. He may have had trouble finding his change today, and I couldn't really tell if any of the pitches in the mid- to upper-80s were splitters from where I was ... I didn't know he had one, so it's possible a few of the changes were splitters. Hopefully I didn't just catch him on his best day ...

Temple's boy Brian Johnson 4IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 4-3 GO-FO, 79-46 P-S Always comforting to see a polished college pitcher hold his own against Low-A talent. I'm not a big fan of Brian Johnson, but to call him polished is such a stretch. Plus, it would be fun if he make it so we can say how awesome BJ is.

If BJ is not polished I wonder why they drafted him. Especially after they traded Head.

I don't think it's the weather, I think it's the pitching. He had something a 20/1 K/BB ratio in the month he spent in Portland last year too. Long term I'm not overly concerned about it, but I also think he might really struggle at times this season. Probably partially true. He did mention that playing in the WBC against the Japanese pitchers with their weird hitches really threw his timing off. Probably at least a few weeks before he's regular again (high fiber diet?).
