The solution to the bullpen problems were in front of us the entire time, just throw complete games.

It is not possible for this team to win a 1-0 game. Or a 2-0 game for that matter. We did it!

I don’t think it’s possible for us to win 1-0 unless we get a starter going 9 It happened!

Thought for sure he was coming out after the eighth. The rotation has piled some complete games between Wacha, Eovaldi, and Pivetta the past month.

I think Joey Cora called up AC and told him to use the 2005 White Sox ALCS strategy, complete games for days

Last time a Red Sox pitcher won a complete game shut out on a score 1-0 2007 Curt Schilling Was that the perfect game against the A’s that Lugo blew (and Shannon Stewart got the single with 2 outs in the 9th)?

Yes, but Lugo had nothing to do with it. Schilling shook off Varitek and Stewart his a shot Cora couldn't reach. It was a clean hit. Schilling then got the final out.

Just as everyone expected, Michael Wacha has been our best pitcher this season.
The pitching holding itself together until Sale and Paxton return has been huge, and I'd say it's even set us up well to make a real push with so many division games remaining. Maybe we'll see some regression from Wacha, Hill, etc. as the season goes on, but having the insurance of Sale and Paxton can counter that.

I’m the biggest CVaz hater on defense, but that pitch calling felt like Varitek was back there. Actually with PitchCom maybe it was lmao

Spectacular game by Wacha, especially with no margin for error.
Two months done and I'm quite wrong in my assessment of Wacha so far. Didn't think the small sample size toward the end of the season would override the past several years, but the fact of the matter is that he's been lights out. Great signing thus far. Hopefully he can keep this up.
It occurs to me if Sale comes back reasonably healthy and effective, the Sox do have four playoff worthy starters in Eovaldi, Sale, Wacha, and Pivetta, meaning that both Whitlock and Houck and Hill even wind up in the pen for a post-season series. Maybe Bloom can get a proven closer after all if he can rent Dave Robertson from the Cubs in a deal, as both Sean McAdam and Peter Abraham have mentioned that Bloom is "kicking the tires", or whatever that means. Maybe one or two of Bello, Mata, or German can help the pen as well (and Taylor, too, when he returns). They just need that lead dog at the end of the pen, and Whitlock is better serves as a starter, but if the Sox staff is deep enough, they only need four starters for the post-season which would free Whitlock up for pen duty without sacrificing his starting abilities during that regular season.
All this is if they can survive playing all of those AL East games. Winning against the lesser teams is great and necessary but the true test is how they survive all of those games against NY, TB, and Tor.

Would say something about Lugo;s not so hot first half but I won't speak ill of the dead. I'll just say that Lugo was pretty damn good, offensively and defensively in the second half of the season and the post-season that year, when it really mattered.

Yeah and he induced the walk-off error in the Mother’s Day Miracle game, so he’ll always have a special place in Red Sox Nation! Hanley also blew a perfect game in similar fashion for Kershaw, who ended up completing the no-hitter. It’s crazy that was 15 years ago, that was draft day and I remember being pumped about Nick Hagadone and Ryan Dent lol. Hagadone got us VMart at least and I guess Matt Barnes and Henry Owens as comp picks (the Beltre JBJ and Swihart might have been a little better)

What a difference a month makes.
Swept at Fenway by the CWS, the Red Sox embarked on a road trip beginning in Atlanta on 5/10 languishing at 10-19. 18-8 since. Granted not against the beasts of the AL East, but they did take a series against HOU. It does feel like this team is different now. Starting pitching is keeping them in most games. Defense seems to be better than last season (didn't look at any numbers) at least with the eye test. There are still roster moves that need to be made, but I think those roster moves will be much different than I envisioned a month ago.

this game tells me a lot about Cora's thinking. If you relievers don't get your act together, tbere will be more complete games. tired of losing late in games. This is the 3rd one and every one has worked like a charm. it should light a fire under the relievers to perform, but I am not holding my breath.
