Seems pretty good. Valdez maybe who we wanted Downs to be? No. Downs was a top-50 prospect when we got him. MLB PL has Valdez 28th in the Astros' system.

Abreu looks to have tools, but A LOT of swing and miss in his game. 108 K's in 329 at bats. He does have 23 steals and an incredible 78 walks which gives him a .399 on base percentage. He looks interesting. AVG OBP SLG OPS G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB .249 .399 .459 .858 89 329 81 82 24 0 15 54 78 108 23

Looks like they’re targeting hitters with high IsoD. Lack of patience at the plate has been a pain point after 2018

This sucks. The Yankees would have gotten a better return

He meant as a player, not his prospect ranking. Yes, the biggest prospect in the Mookie Betts trade was higher ranked than the rental Christian Vazquez trade.

Valdez is hitting great this year at 23, split between AA and AAA. Kinda frisky Two home runs yesterday? There is a video dated Aug 1 which I guesss if from yesterday.

Two 35+ FV guys according to Fangraphs. Their ratings seem to be current but no idea how many players they’ve actually updated. Kind of underwhelmed with the return.

Obligatory, where do we think these two rank in the sox system? After just learning who these guys are, I'd say Valdez is in the Winckowski/Paulino/Blaze range, and Abreu is in the next group after that.

Both these guys need to go on the 40. I guess Abreu is possibly not a lock to get protected?

Valdez is #12 on BA's list and Abreu is #21 (they're #29 and 30 on MLB Pipeline's list). From BA on both: Valdez has a bat-first second base profile with a lot of offensive skills to believe in. Valdez will need to hold up his advanced level of performance over the next year to earn a shot at a full-time role at the major league level. A breakout position player over the last two seasons, Abreu has quietly proven he has value on both sides of the ball with the power and on-base ability to develop into a solid average regular at the major league level. Are both of these guys Rule 5 eligible after the season? Base on their signing dates Valdez 7/2015 and Abreu 7/2017, it looks like they will be.

Valdez has been playing 2B/3B/LF/DH/1B this year, so a bit of a left utility infielder who can't play SS (only 2 games there in minor league career). He's having a strong offensive year after being lackluster previously. He's only 5'9" tall.
Abreu is a right-handed OFer. Has played mostly CF but seems projected as a corner OFer. True 3-outcome type, with lots of walks/strikeouts but a poor batting average. Pretty consistent minor league career in terms of batting statistics.
Both are 23, and unfortunately, both will need to be placed on the 40-man to avoid the rule-5 draft. Not a sure thing that either would be drafted. Interesting players, but not a great prospects. Both seem to be borderline top-30 prospects. Guessing Valdez falls just outside and Abreu just makes it. (scouting grades range from 35+ to 40 on Fangraphs/MLB)

Yes, the biggest prospect in the Mookie Betts trade was higher ranked than the rental Christian Vazquez trade. I understand what he meant. When we got Downs, it was reasonable to expect him to be an impact MLer. It's reasonable to think that Valdez will never see significant time in the The Show.

Don’t know who these guys are, but from what people are saying, it seems like a good return.

Valdez was lightly regarded before the season but has absolutely annihilated high minors pitching this year. Any grade/ranking from before the season is going to be outdated

If one of Valdez and Abreu sticks in the majors, the Red Sox will get a ton of surplus value in this trade. So agreed it’s reasonable to think that neither will, but it’s also reasonable to recognize both have a chance. I wanted Vazquez and Martinez to be package for a bigger singular return, but for Vazquez alone, these fliers make sense to me.

Any grade/ranking from before the season is going to be outdated 178 wRC at AA over 205 PA. 118 wRC at AAA over 173 PA. So not exactly 'annihilated'. Good news is that his K% went down in AAA. Let's hope that stays and his BB% goes back up.

That whole AA team walks a ton (what’s going on down there?) www.fangraphs.com/leaders/minor-league?pos=all&level=0&lg=5,6,7&stats=bat&qual=0&type=1&team=185&season=2022&seasonEnd=2022&org=&ind=0&splitTeam=false&players=&sort=5,1

Another homegrown regular traded for a bag of balls. It’s pretty frustrating to see a resource-rich organization like ours operate a little like the Oakland A’s. Sort of a sad day.

I hope another trade results in a catcher who has a chance to be major league average.
