We have 2 Plaweckis now?
Are we getting a sniff of what tanking feels like?

This guy can throw. He's a solid backup.

Good defense, good framing numbers, can't hit. Your standard backup catcher. 4 years of control left. Prob cost them a little something I'm guessing
Not a good sign for Wong/Hernandez probably

Sweet. Salary dump and we have a second catcher.

McGuire's controlled for the next three seasons, Diekman's been really bad and they cut some salary here.

Diekman has negative value, McGuire has a little bit of positive value. Hard not to like this deal.

Not upset getting rid of diekman. I belive his salary AAV was 4 mil plus Vaz 7 so far they've shipped out 11 mil AAV and brought back 6 mil from Pham and about 720K for mcguire. Still hoping they duck under the tax so that could be something to keep an eye on.

He's only 27 and is a lefty. Pretty solid pickup for a mid-reliever the team didn't need while saving a few bucks.
AND a PTBNL? Even if that's nothing, pretty darn good.
Of the Red Sox 6 (soon to be 5 or less) AAA and MLB catchers, he's now the only lefty.

I mean… obviously not gonna make a world of difference and not gonna be like “Bloom is a genius” but… seems like a kinda smart trade?

It’s a win for getting rid of Diekman. I knew he was erratic but I didn’t know he was *that* much of a wild ride

This is the key for the FO, you don’t draft for need but you can trade for need.

McGuire is the Plawecki replacement IMO. Question is, do they ride with Wong/McGuire platoon (good defense, bad offense) or try and upgrade?

I won't miss Diekman but if Reese is the regular catcher in 2023 then it'll be a bad trade because we'll be subjected to 350 - 400 plate appearances from his noodle bat.
As a backup he's fine, but what does that make Connor Wong?
I would not like a Reese/Wong platoon in 2023.
