I'll miss Eck a lot, but good for him. He deserves that happiness.

He's on a VERY short list of people, that I don't know in person, I'd love to have a beer with.

I know not everyone is a fan, but I definitely enjoy Eckersley. He played the game, has humility and a unique personality. In short he makes listening to the game fun which is the job of a color analyst.
I hope this is HIS choice and he is not being pushed out from above.

Thank goodness for MLB.TV letting you use the NESN feed with the WEEI audio. The Sox radio booth is fabulous but Eck is the only guy on NESN worth tuning in for (no disrespect to Jahmai).
I do like Mike Monaco, though. Hopefully he gets a major role going forward and DOB can get, uh, a national network promotion?

When I first saw the name of this thread, I was afraid it was going to say he was forced into retirement by a health issue.
I'm glad he's just going to enjoy the good life with all the iron he has made. I'm sure he lives in a house that is well-stocked with cheese and lots of pairs of shoes. The heat and hot water are, of course, provided by gas. His financial adviser is a regular Stats Masterson and his barbershop is nearby, so it's easy for him to go get his moss cut.

While I also enjoy Kevin Millar in the booth there is just nobody more fun to listen to than Dennis Eckersley. We have been so lucky over the past couple years to have him, I'll miss it a lot.

So, now, we get to enjoy infomercials during innings and the wonderful and insightful sounds of DOB and Mazz. Because NESN is in my area, I don't get the luxury of switching the audio on the MLB.TV feed. Have to go old school with radio volume up - TV volume down. Hopefully, Joe Castiglione stays.

Thing I've always appreciated about Eck as an announcer is that you'd assume he was a journeyman starter based on his stories and attitude rather than a Hall of Famer. Definitely glad that he's retiring for a good reason - if you can't use your good fortune to spend time with the grandkids, what's the point? Hopefully he'll still be able to pop in occasionally on West Coast road trips.

In short he makes listening to the game fun which is the job of a color analyst. I hope this is HIS choice and he is not being pushed out from above. Sounds like it is totally his choice. He's moving to California to be near his grandchildren. He said it was time to move onto the next phase (I'm paraphrasing). He's moving on for the best of reasons. He'll be missed. It's funny. I always thought of him as an Oakland A. He's in the HOF for his A's closer days. But he is also truly a Red Sox as well. He did have his 20 game winner season with the Sox and he did pitch for them for 7 years before coming back for a final season in 1998 with them. His trade for Buckner opened up a spot for Roger Clemens in 1984 and by the time he came back he was teammates with Pedro Martinez. In the playoffs he gave up a HR to a Cleveland (his original team) guy named Manny Ramirez. He gave up the famous HR to Gibson that could have sunk him. Instead he recorded the final out of the earthquake marred World Series the following season. Was always accountable, too. I'll miss watching him on NESN. I'll take solace in the while I'm sure his 1989 World Series ring is his most meaningful, he also owns 4 World Series rings with the Red Sox via his excellent work at NESN. Yes, he is an A first and foremost, but he is also truly a Red Sox, too. He deserves the best.

Maybe someone else can confirm this as I am not 100% sure. I believe Eckersley was first to use the term "Walk Off" which is now readily used all across baseball (too frequently against the Red Sox)

If you want help figuring out a VPN to get around the MLB.TV blackouts, DM me! It can be a pain to get working the first time, but once you have a method that works it's usually consistent for the season.

I think he has also referred to going out to eat as going out to "grease and oil" and the upper deck as the "upper tank."

This is a tough pill to swallow. Eckersley is one of my favorite baseball broadcasters ever, the enthusiasm and passion he has for the game is so apparent and so contagious, not to mention slew of fantastic baseball terms he coined. Hearing him call a game is just such an enjoyable experience to me, I’ll always cherish the memories of hearing him, Don and Remy. NESN has some gigantic shoes to fill

Maybe someone else can confirm this as I am not 100% sure. I believe Eckersley was first to use the term "Walk Off" which is now readily used all across baseball (too frequently against the Red Sox) "The term walk-off originated as "walk-off piece," and was coined by Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley. ''It was always walk-off piece," Eckersley told the Boston Globe. "Like something you would hang in an art gallery. The walk-off piece is a horrible piece of art." The first reference to walk-off came in a July 30, 1988, story in the Gannett News Service: "In Dennis Eckersley's colorful vocabulary, a walk-off piece is a home run that wins the game and the pitcher walks off the mound." Walk-off piece was only intended to describe a pitcher's dejected walk off the field after giving up a game-losing home run, but it soon grew into its own phenomenon." www.mlb.com/glossary/idioms/walk-off
