Franchy has a 90 WRC+ this year, The Sox could certainly do worse than that as a 4th OF. I could also understand them letting him go so suffice to say I don't really have a strong preference for what to do with Franchy. My only strong feeling is to never let him near a first baseman glove again.

Franchy had a decent May, and he was back to bad June and July — probably when pitchers remembered all the holes in his swing. That is not a promising trajectory, and, again, this is not some kid his first time up. This is a guy who has not demonstrated an ability to adjust in about 6 years.
I’m not saying don’t keep him in the minors. I am saying anyone who thinks he is going to be more than this is begging for a broken heart. Sometimes a guy is what he keeps telling you he is.

He's like a wind-up toy. You let him get hot in AAA, then you call him back up to ride that wave. The second he gets cold you send him down to hit a few 480-footers and then you start the process over again.

In that span, we played AL east teams 8 times - 5 Balt (we went 2-3), and 3 Toronto (we went 1-2). Our next 30 has 17 against AL east teams, plus games against Minnesota I mean, I dunno... Either there's some magic spell that's making them way underperform against the AL East, or... there isn't, and maybe they'll start playing better.
They've dug a big hole that they probably won't be able to get out of, but if you've never seen a team make an improbable run you haven't been watching baseball very long.
I've been watching for 55 years and have seen improbable runs, often. But those teams seem to have something - personality, some spark, some exciting new player. Given that the best predictor of future performance is past performance, I don't see a run in this particular version of the Sox. I'd be the happiest person in the world if I'm wrong, though.

There’s no “magic spell”, it’s just that they are the worst team in their division and played accordingly all year. They *have been*, yes. When I was working in the investing space, we always used the expression “don’t catch falling knives” in relation to stocks that were going down. The Red Sox are a falling knife. I do like it that after 120 games of TOTAL mediocrity/underachievement, you are still in the “they are better than this!” camp, though.

When I was working in the investing space, we always used the expression âdonât catch falling knivesâ in relation to stocks that were going down. The Red Sox are a falling knife. I do like it that after 120 games of TOTAL mediocrity/underachievement, you are still in the âthey are better than this!â camp, though. I'm not in that camp. I'm in the "they've had a bunch of injuries, without which they'd be better" camp. But, you know, the injuries have happened. Their top two starters are both on the IL. One of their three best position players has been out for like a month and a half, and another one (maybe both of the others) is obviously struggling with some nagging stuff.
But is it impossible for Bogaerts to get right and JDM to discover his 2021 form and Kiké to do the same and Pham and Hosmer to close the holes in the lineup and Devers to hit 15 homers the rest of the way? That's obviously not impossible. It's obviously also not likely.
I mean, I was just observing that stranger things have happened in baseball than a mediocre team getting hot and sneaking into the playoffs. If you folks think that is literally impossible you're making a much stronger claim than I am.

Random thought during this delay, would Casas, Bello, and maybe Yorke be enough to get Ohtani? They have Hosmer at 1B as a stop-gap and Ohtani is a DH/SP combo package.

Stripling has Nestor Cortes levels of garbage stuff. I have no idea how he is doing well this year.

Not very sporting of the baseball gods to let a guy with an OPS in the 400s hit a ball that well and not get a hit

It certainly feels like 2022 that the two guys they get at the deadline promptly get hurt.

Random thought during this delay, would Casas, Bello, and maybe Yorke be enough to get Ohtani? They have Hosmer at 1B as a stop-gap and Ohtani is a DH/SP combo package. What is your rationale here? Ohtani is a FA after next season, right? When he first came to MLB, he showed a clear preference for staying on the West Coast. I’m not sure if that has changed, but one has to assume he’d much rather re-sign to be on the West Coast next year, as well. Also, you have to think Ohtani will command $40m+/year given his unique skillset. Have you seen any evidence that the Sox would give out a contract like that? I’m not sure if the prospect package you proposed gets a deal done anyway(probably not), but I don’t see why giving up all those years of their better prospects for a year of Ohtani makes a lot of sense.
