Last year we thought Cora’s in game management was excellent and Bloom had us on a good long strategy. It’s hard to believe they both became dumb this year. year. Haha, please don't lump us all in the "previously praised Cora" bandwagon! I haven't really ever been a fan of his in-game mechinations, and was more 'meh' as he was re-hired.

A manager's main job during a game is to decide when to bring in a new pitcher. Have you seen our bullpen lately? Not a lot to choose from. It's not his fault that Bloom hasn't given him much to work with. A good bullpen with get you out of a lot of jams. A bad one will get you in one.
A manager uses what the GM gives him. Cora is frustrated. Bloom had better get to work.

Communication: I think his best strength is that he is liked by his players which is very important. He is regularly available post-game and manages to answer questions without saying much (probably a good thing). He has a reputation as being a great communicator but I am not sure where that comes from.... A few weeks ago, one of his highly touted rookies had a melt down. When asked if he spoke to him, Cora indicated that "the players handled it". When Duran was asked he said that no one had spoken to him. This seems like a communication breakdown to me....I am sure there are other examples of him handling things better. Fundamentals: For several seasons now this team has not been ready coming out of spring training. We continue to see the Red Sox not know how many outs there are, throw to the wrong base, miss cutoffs, unable to catch popups, unable to catch flyballs, run into foolish outs on the bases. These are fundamentals that don't appear to be encouraged.....Granted a major league player should be fundamentally sound before reaching the majors, but it still needs to be reinforced as being important by management. I don't see evidence that this is the case. Injuries: Clearly played a role in what he was/wasn't able to do. Perhaps that is bad luck but what role has Cora played in the injuries? Kiké, Sale & Story were not his fault, but what about Whitlock and how he was randomly moved to the rotation mid-season without much buildup... Schreiber has recently shown signs of wearing down from overuse....Are players playing out of position leading to injury? Perception: Perhaps his biggest weakness (at least in my mind) is his previous involvement with cheating. I don't believe for a second that he was the only one doing so, but the fact that he has had limited success since returning from his suspension kinda adds to the negative perception. There are no perfect managers and Cora is human like everyone else. I expect he will be the manager for 2023 and beyond. I just hope he can learn from the last few seasons. What about in-game management, though? That's been by far my biggest problem with him.

He tripped over that bar several times this season.

I agree with that. However, when you look at the rest of your bullpen and don't see much there, you tend to use the hot hand. It's kind of a no win situation. I think he's done the best with what he has, which was very little. Want to blame someone for lack of assets? Try the GM.

Every complaint of Cora is either "he uses bad relievers too often" or "he runs his best relievers into the ground," and it's clear that the only way to avoid criticism is: have a better bullpen.

example #37 Using Familia in the 7th with a 1-run lead. So who else would you have put in then? Whitlock wasn't available. Schreiber wasn't available. Strahm wasn't going to be able to go 3 innings. Everybody else sucks. The only other alternative I can think of would be Wacha pitching another inning and hoping Strahm can get 6 outs because I can't think of any other good scenarios. His bullpen has sucked. That is something I don't think you can blame Cora for. He didn't bring these stiffs in. That's on Bloom. He found one diamond in the rough and the rest of the spaghetti he threw against the wall stunk. I know spending big $ on bullpens can be foolhardy, but here's a scenario where spaghetti flinging did them no good.

What is it about this guy? Does he have a reputation in his pregame workout routine? Does he bench 500 on his off-days? He's been a guy with a lot of bullpen experience, who hasn't provided anything performance wise. Sometimes, it's not what you do, it's who know.

My first thought would be to use the pitching staff (including the bullpen) differently in the previous few games - So that Familia isn't pitching the 7th tonight. On a tangent, I think Cora is the absolute best guy to have if the Sox want to bring Devers and Bogaerts back on deals below market value... because his best skill is interpersonal relationships in the clubhouse.

On a tangent, I think Cora is the absolute best guy to have if the Sox want to bring Devers and Bogaerts back on deals below market value... because his best skill is interpersonal relationships in the clubhouse. The issue is he burned out Schreiber and Whitlock as well because the Sox actually had a chance to win 5 consecutive games. The Red Sox bullpen depth is so damn bad they have very few ways of winning a semi-close game if Whitlock or Schreiber isn't involved. The lack of bullpen depth isn't Cora's fault. At some point if the game was close they were going to be stuck with Familia or Brasier or Kelly or Ort or whatever drek they have. It was inevitable. That's one of the reasons why the Sox cannot stay hot for too long a time now. Their bullpen won't allow for it. Agreed that interpersonal relationships are what he does best. But I think he was more than that in 2018. Everything he did was gold and he was very good at relating the analytics to the players - you might recall Mookie Betts waving a defense index card in victory after catching a Mauer liner that normally would have been in the gap but was caught easily. Cora got buy-in from players skeptical of analytics.

But again, he's had numerous headscratching moments in his previous winning seasons - including the championship 2018 season. The rational of the 'ends justifying the means' is too flawed for me. For example Keeping Duran in CF, regardless of who's in uniform, is nonsensical imo. It probably won't cost them a playoff birth - but the thought process of that decision is just flawed from a managerial standpoint.

So. If you remember back when Cora was ejected in KC. Jomboy was preparing a breakdown of that ejection but was having trouble lip reading, so he set it aside. He was apparently cleaning out his drafts today and realized he forgot to finish the video so he released it today.
tuns out cora told the ump he did not want to get ejected. However the ump misheard him and thought he said he wanted to get ejected. View:
