How should the rest of the 2022 season be handled?
|
Post by soxfansince67 on Aug 26, 2022 7:48:20 GMT -5
Who should play, who should sit, who should go, who should be brought up...and when?
This may take pressure off the remaining game threads.

Call-up tomorrow: - Wong - Kelly - Maybe German - Maybe Casas
Bench/Cut: - Plawecki - Familia - Sawamura - Brasier
No other moves really make sense IMO. If guys are hurt sit them down and let them fully recover. Otherwise, you bring Story back into the fold and hope he mashes to end the year on a high. The rest of the guys, you keep playing and hope some stuff clicks for them heading to the offseason.

Bring up the kids on September 1st:
- Wong - Kelly - German - Casas
Let's get some MLB playing time for these players.

I am not really sure what people expect. They are not going to release JDM. This is the squad. They’ll do normal end of season call-ups, but I expect they’ll just press on.
I don’t really see what difference it makes if Wong, for example, gets an extra week or two. He’s been up before, and he’ll be up next year when everyone starts anew.

Me personally the more the better. It will give me a good reason to watch.
I think Bloom is going to be cautious , just my opinion he burned himself with what happened with Duran. I’m still sticking with my theory.

Hear me out, for entertainment value, all of the Players and Management of the team should be forced to play wearing mascot costumes.
Watching Duran muff a routine fly ball is painful, but it could be made more entertaining if Puss in Boots adorably drops the ball. Chaim Bloom appears as Foghorn Leghorn, Dalbec could be Spongebob, Kiké one of the minions, the opportunities are endless folks.

Here is what I would do ASAP
DFA Plawecki, Cordero, Dalbec Bring up Wong and Hernandez, add Casas to the 40 man and bring him up DFA Brasier, Familia, Davis Bring up Winkowski, add Kelly and German to the 40 man
C - McGuire/Wong/Hernandez 1 - Casas/Hosmer (when back) 2 - Arroyo SS - Xander 3rd - Raffi LF - Pham CF - Kiké/Duran RF - Verdugo/Refsnyder DH - reduce Martinez ABs, use Casas and Hernandez to see what they can do
Use Winck as an opener see what Kelly and German can do
Player numbers, etc may be off - but we need to see what we have at this point with regard to Wong, Hernandez, Kelly and German, and let's start Casas time.

I agree with most of what's been discussed here, but disagree on the OF going forward.
If the idea is to play the young guys, which I'm all for (FG playoff odds down to 2.1%), then they should absolutely be playing Duran full time. No point in benching him against lefties so that Kiké/Pham/Refsnyder can get more at-bats. Those 3 should be playing sparingly (when possible) as we know who/what they are and it's possible none of them are on the team next season.
I'd like to see Dalbec get regular playing time from here-on-out, including some time in the outfield as I'm curious as to how he will fare out there (given that statcast shows he has above-average speed). Dalbec cut down his strikeout rate (34.4% to 32.9%) and increased his walk rate (6.2% to 8.5%) but still regressed offensively. He adjusted his approach, likely to be a more patient hitter, but it has led to him swinging at pitches over the plate 5.6% less while swinging at pitches off the plate only 0.35% less - a trade-off which clearly isn't worth it. Whether it's in MLB or AAA, Dalbec needs at-bats to work on his approach.
Franchy getting the occasional start wouldn't be so bad either. He's out of options, but I have a feeling he will be competing with Duran for a backup OF spot come March.
Promoting Valdez after Worcester's season ends, to play another corner OF spot (and elsewhere if available) makes sense as well as they will have to protect him this off-season anyway.
It's unlikely, but promoting Rafaela wouldn't be crazy. He's looking more-and-more like the Red Sox CFer of the future and he needs to be added to the 40-man this off-season. He would also give fans an extra reason to watch the games (extra $$ in the pocket after a down season should appease ownership a bit). But this depends on whether the Red Sox would be willing to give him a legit chance at the CF job to start/early next season or if the plan is for him to stay down for at least the first half (and keep an year of control on him). The most important thing at this point is to put him in the best position possible to improve, and struggling for a couple of weeks against MLB pitchers who are able to make him to chase pitches off-the-plate wouldn't be a bad learning experience.
There seem to be quite a few options in the outfield, let's keep the old guys' playtime down until next year.

I'd be ok with sending him back down to try him out at 2B, and to maybe re-tool his swing a little back to a more contact orientated power ally guy vs. over the fence. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if he could get on base more, no matter how he does it, his value goes up exponentially. His main deficiencies are he doesn't have an arm for the outfield, and his reads are atrocious, even after several years of seasoning before he was called up. It's also clear to me the changes he made to harness more power introduced a beach ball sized hole in his swing.

why do you guys worry? The sox are great the first 18 years of every century--only 78 years of rebuilding in our future--that is what happens when you sell off the Babe to finance a Broadway play and Mookie to save money for your soccer team

So....how should it? Tampa series done, things not looking better, Duran back at AAA. What next?

Play everyone you're interested in having contributing roles in 2023.
Casas Wong Duran Bello Wink Seabold Downs
Should all be playing close to every day the rest of the way. I'd even look to move Whitlock back to the starting rotation.
Probably means DFA Plawecki DFA Martinez Move Hill to the BP Keep Eovladi shut down
That would be a 6 man of Whitlock Bello Wink Seabold Wacha Pivetta
Story coming back complicates the infield a bit.

Whitlock back to starting this season seems like a long shot, unless it's to be a 2 inning opener. It would take too long to stretch him out within a single month (or risk injury). Think we will have to wait until spring training.

That's fair, but I would still go that route, maybe you make it a 5 man and have someone like Bello or Seabold piggyback off Whitlocks 2 inning start, so that they also get a starters load.

Tank. Tank. Tank.
We are currently at the 14th pick (tied with SF) and are as close to the 8th and 9th picks as we are making the playoffs. We also have 4 games vs. Texas who is currently 11th so there is potential to move up a few spots. The teams ahead of Texas would be difficult to catch. That would almost double our odds at getting the #1 overall pick. We can still play spoiler within the division but there is really no point in trying in any of the non-division/non-Baltimore games.

Be competitors. Try to win games. Don’t give up as easily as the fans do.
There’s very little chance they make the playoffs, but if they don’t try, there is no chance at all.
And there is value for next season from the process of playing winning baseball for a month, even if you ultimately fall short of the postseason.
Benching the vets and calling up the prospects makes it more fun for the fans, but that is often not what’s best for the prospect. Facing MLB competition when you’re not ready can have a detrimental effect.

The problem with tanking is most of the teams ahead of you (or I suppose below you depending on how you look it) aren't very good either. Anytime you lose a game most of the teams higher up the draft board than you are losing to. So right now the Sox are sitting 14th with a .76% chance.
I really don't see the Sox getting any higher than 11th. Even if they play awful, lets give them 10, that's still just a 1.8% chance. This is the NBA, we are fighting over a 1% chance increase here where I'd rather see them play good ball with some young players that give you confidence that this team can come back strong next year with a few additions and a cleaner bill of health.
No matter what, they're probably getting a pick in the 12-16 range. They will have a nice pool of talent to pick from there.
EDIT: This is NOT the NBA.

I like tanking at this point because from a binary mindset, I like seeing something appreciable that I can easily root for. They lost, therefore this good can come from it whereas I see no good from a win, therefore I have a rooting interest. It's hard to quantify progress and get excited about it. Jeter Downs taking better swings is a better outcome than did they win or lose. Also, baseball draft is a bit of a guessing game. In 2013, Mark Appel was the first overall pick. I'm sure the Astros were excited about the. In the same draft, Aaron Judge was 32nd, I bet not many NY fans cared at the time. For reference, that was the Red Sox pick for Trey Ball at 7th overall. Many on here wanted Austin Meadows, which was still, "eh" (still infinitely better than not making the majors). So, I like it because it's aesthetically pleasing, but you can win the World Series and get the best pick in the baseball draft.

Brayan Bello comes out tonight and spins a 7 inning 1 hit gem. We just took a step away from a potential better draft pick, no progression towards tanking. But how much better do you feel about 2023 seeing Bello pitch a great game?

My sons (6 and 4) are old enough to watch the game and get excited when the Red Sox are winning, so I want them to win because that's more fun for my boys. They don't care about draft picks - they just want to see the "big kids" hit home runs and throw the ball and proudly read me the score bug every time it updates.

While tanking for the #1 pick odds is tantalizing, my bigger rationale is the larger bonus pools, and getting ahead of possible rivals on the draft boards. That probably won't matter much in round 1 given who the Red Sox tend to draft but that can be bigger in later rounds. My view is that being in the middle is the worst place to be, and that seems to be where the Red Sox are destined.
And fwiw we'd be in a much better draft scenario than 12-16 if we had committed to tanking like I had been saying since before the trade deadline.
