When I saw Almanzar he seemed slow in the field and a slow bat, but a huge exceptionally young guy.
Could he be catching up to his size?
"growing" into his body?
(and for the love of God don't leave Webster"s definition of growing for me).
As I understand it, Almanzar's struggles have been more an issue of makeup/work ethic than simple lack of talent. Maybe a few years of getting passed by just about every other prospect in the system started a fire under the guy? I would love to hear more reports on him.
Id love to hear some on this as well. Seems like he's been in the system forever but he still is good age for AA. Maybe he is a late bloomer.
Yup...attitude seems to have been a problem with this guy......Jackie above does not say when he saw Almanzar but I saw him when he was first in the GCL and the subject of much hype. He hit a gapper to deep left-center and somehow legged it to third. Ungainly was the way I would have then described his running...sort of a disjointed looking young colt. He was then playing third and did seem slow coming in for balls and, to me, did not have quick-twitch great range. I recall a couple of bounders getting past down the left-field line. People have described him as slow to adapt at the plate but hey, there is no denying his stats from last year. So far he is picking up from there offensively. Another good year and he might be jumping up the Soxprospects ratings.

I thought I remember hearing that he was just much more raw when he signed than they were led to believe. Like I think I remember people saying he didn't even know all the rules of the game when he first signed. I might be misremembering the details, but I know he was something of a joke when he first arrived

From that article he said Webster got 17 swings and misses or just over 20% of his pitches.

He is lean and fit in both pictures, but one thing to note that I mentioned earlier during spring training, look at his "tilt" last year. In the picture from his recent outing his elbow is below his shoulder when his plant foot hits allowing him to control his pitches down in the zone.

Interesting, but Justin Haley threw 3.2 innings and didn't allow a hit. Unfortunately, he walked six guys.
