Ortiz was scratched after the lineup cards were announced. No word on why. You can follow Matt Huegel (@matthuegelsp) on Twitter, who is at the game.

Yeah, I don't know about anyone else but I'm not feeling so good about this Ortiz situation.

Hopefully he's just sick still. Even if he comes back I think he will need a good many off days worked in.

Ranaudo pulled with a no hitter through 5. I think we can officially say he is back.

There is the answer.
Renaudo pulled. What a shame.
Bard keeps it clean.
Which leads me to My Daniel Bard theory.
This was his first clean inning. Also his most important (read intense) one.
Keeping the situation that shall not be named alive must have been important on the bench.
I think Bard needs this. He will have a difficult time finding the level of intensity in the minors and has had one since his demotion.
Reading through the lines of his comments since last year he clearly feels his movement from starting to the minors was unjustified.
Hopefully he will continue and build off tonight.
Renaudo has started so well it does change the face of the system with Webster.

Carpenter coughs up a two-run PawSox lead.
Ruiz in for Bard to start the 7th. K, BB, K, BB.

These are some fairly lame excuses for Bard's bad pitching. He didn't have any problem dominating the minors on his way up, was there a greater "level of intensity" back then?

He did have his struggles.
Again no excuses.
Can you imagine what it must be like to go from MLB and 'choosing" between starting or potentially closing for a team with world series ambitions and then ending up in the minors a couple short months later?
Think about it. You know these guys do the math (or at least I would)). I'm in year x arb for a couple more my comps projected out will lead to x millions in a couple years...
The point is not about making excuses.
Everyone has a different way to success.
We must all agree that so far not so good on the handling of Bard.

Noun A reason or explanation put forward to defend or justify a fault or offense. Bard's problems don't have anything to do with the lack of intensity in the minors, his feelings of an "unjustified" demotion, etc... they have to do with the fact that he hasn't been a good pitcher for quite a while now. That's it.

Let's play your game. Under your scenario, how do you make him as good as he once was?
We are close to a year of wasted talent.

Almanzar goes yard (3rd of year). 5-2 Portland. How crazy is it to think that Almanzar may play himself into serious contention for a 40-Man slot? I know that it is really early and a rather small sample, but between the strides he made last year and what he is doing right now as a 22 year old in AA, he may be a guy to watch.

Relievers burn fast and short. That's how it is. If there is a way to fix him, it's mechanical. Listen to Chris Mellon's report on the last SP podcast. He's still kind of a mess out there.

As I understand it, Almanzar's struggles have been more an issue of makeup/work ethic than simple lack of talent. Maybe a few years of getting passed by just about every other prospect in the system started a fire under the guy? I would love to hear more reports on him.
