Per Speier: Paul Toboni promoted to VP in charge of amateur scouting and player development. Devin Pearson promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting Coaching contracts not renewed: Anthony Iapoce (senior hitting coordinator), Lance Carter (AA pitching coach), Nate Spears (A+ hitting coach), Nick Green (A pitching coach). Salem manager declined an invite to return. Ryan Jackson moved from Field Coordinator to a special assistant role in player development. Exactly what does the senior hitting coordinator do? Give pointers throughout the system on how not to swing at pitches in the dirt or pitches a foot outside the zone? I don't see Fatse's name there, so i guess they think he did a great job. I don't

Fatse was Assistant Hitting Coach for a few years then got promoted when Hyers left. 2022 was the first season as the top hitting coach. Honest queston....Did any Red Sox hitters improve in 2022?
Based on your preferred metric, who did Fatse help?

As for "Give pointers throughout the system on how not to swing at pitches in the dirt or pitches a foot outside the zone?", if that's how useless you think coaches are, why have them?
And on Fatse, I'm not sure the hitting coach's job is to help MLB hitters "improve" in the literal sense. You're not going to see a hitting coach's impact in a one-year sample. If that were the case the Red Sox should've given Greg Colbrunn a lifetime contract after 2013.

Listening to Cora in interviews since he became the manager in 2018, it seemed like he was bringing a different mindset with his "Do Damage" approach. He wants more aggressiveness. This is a reason I enjoyed watching Casas so much after he was called up. He doesn't chase. He's the Bronze God of Walks. |

I think Cora was trying to say do damage with a pitch in the strike zone even if it's early in the count. The theory was that a batter might get one cookie in an atbat and if the hitter sees it, even if its early on the count, go after it, as opposed to taking a called strike, falling behind in the count and hoping for the next cookie to come in that atbat that never happens. That's not the same as swing at anything that moves, which is what the Sox approach at the plate seemed to morph into. Walks are great. Passivity at the plate not as much. I think that's what Cora started out preaching. Somewhere along the way the message got warped. |

I had the assumption that it was the minors he worked with, but just needed some clarification and yes I did use some sarcasm in my assessment. Fatse has not shown me an inkling of what Cora always professes,,,"Keep within the zone". this team really misses Hyers and to me it shows. |

Coordinator = roving minor league coach.
The team was just as aggressive with Hyers as it was this year. That's the whole reason the Schwarber acquisition was great - he was a lot more patient than guys like Devers and Bogaerts.
I think the following is a poor way to measure the effect of Hyers leaving (need a bigger sample size), but I don't really see that the team was appreciably worse on the whole at the plate this year.

Vazquez: .258/.308/.352 - .282/.327/.432
Bogaerts: .295/.370/.493 - .307/.377/.456
Devers: .279/.352/.538 - .295/.358/.521
Verdugo: .289/.351/.426 - .280/.328/.405

Vazquez was way better, Bogaerts and Devers were about the same, Verdugo a bit worse, Hernandez way worse after an injury marred year, DJM worse... where's the huge effect of Hyers leaving? Power was down but it was also down across the game, which accounts for a good amount of that most likely.

Eddie Romero JR is one of the best in the FO. I hope we never lose him.
I’m gonna go on the record if the FO want Xman and Devers wrapped up by Christmas put Romero the point man. By the new year they would be wrapped up.

This isn't roster related per say, but what are the optics that Veneble is willing to leave Boston to go to Texas? I think that's a pretty damning testament to the direction he thinks the Sox are heading.

MLB teams can sometimes challenge whether something is a promotion or not but I'm sure they wouldn't have even thought about it here. Would be a bad look. FWIW the Rangers do also have a bench coach. |
