So, long time lurker really. Enjoy reading the back and forth on here a great deal. I’ve been thinking about this and it is probably completely mental…but with the Angels ownership situation how crazy is asking about Mike Trout? I know he’s getting more injury prone and ageing but I think the hit tool will age well, RF would be fine for now and you can rotate him through DH to help protect him as well. He’s paid what he’s worth at the moment, so don’t think it would cost the world in prospects either. That said he has a no trade but he “feels” like a guy who would get Boston too.
You know I've wondered about Trout too. You have to think the Angels wouldn't trade him, and I think they have said as much. But I agree this is something Bloom should inquire about on the off chance that something might happen. He only played in 119 games last year and still put up 6 WAR lol. Trout in RF for 120 games? Sign me up.

A trade for Trout seems so incredibly unlikely not just because of his contract and being the face of the Angels, but because of the news of his rare back condition. Despite Trout saying he's managing it well (and playing well when he's on the field), he's already missed time with back problems – and you'd have to imagine that front offices would be terrified of making such a monumental bet on a player whose health is such a unique kind of unknown.
That would take some kind of balls to trade for a guy with those medicals getting paid $35.5M AAV for the next seven years.

I don’t disagree with a lot of what you said, just thinking through which outfielder you would be happy to pay $30M plus to in their late 30’s. I’m prepared to bet on Trout more than Judge for certain. It’s why I love the offseason. It’s choose your own adventure time.

Welcome Melvin. You beat me to posting almost the same point about Trout's risky health going forward. He obviously has been a great player but I would proceed extremely cautiously.

Trout is a 10/5 no clause trade player. I doubt he'd approve any trade. Unless he had a deep desire to win all of a sudden, he signed a lifetime contract with the angels for a reason. He wanted to be a Angel for his whole career.

Looking more at those D-Backs outfielders, I am really intrigued by Alek Thomas but agree he will be expensive. He has a nice profile though - solid pop, solid hit tool, can go the other way and is a plus defender. Here is his first career home run, a 103 MPH rocket to left center, off of a 97 MPH fb from Sandy Alcantara:
And here is his spray chart from last year:
That's got me salivating a bit.

You could theoretically put together a large trade for Thomas and Walker headlined by Casas and another prospect in the 5-10 range. Arizona is high on Thomas, so it's going to be a blockbuster

Yeah it seems like Casas would need to headline a trade for Thomas. Another trade that Bloom would definitely need to think hard about. I would not be surprised if the Blue Jays are exploring trading away Jensen for him after the Hernandez trade.
In my opinion if the Sox trade Casas it needs to be for someone established not another prospect type of guy which Thomas is. I like the player just like Casas a lot too and think he's a sure thing starter in this league where the jury is still out on Thomas. Last thing the Sox can afford is trading Casas for someone who ends up not panning out.

I get it. But I think you could swap Casas and Thomas in this sentence and d-backs fans could say the same thing lol.

No doubt which is why prospect for prospect trades are so rare. Just hard to get equal value in prospect for prospect deals.
How about taking on Madison Bumgarner's contract as a part of a blockbuster? It's bad but not terrible (2 more years for $37M). He's no longer an ace, but could still be a useful piece.
Bumgarner, Thomas, and Zac Gallen for Casas, Rafaela, and Brandon Walter.
Trade Values favor the Diamondbacks slightly.
If you want to like the future, don't fall in love with the past.

No chance they use Thomas or Gallen to ditch a contract. Both of those guys could fetch a better package on their own
You're probably right. Bumgarner's contract isn't great, but it's not crippling. Still remove Gallen from the equation and maybe it's a way to get Thomas.

Of course these guys could fetch a better package on their own, but that's because there's value in ditching bad contracts. Why are you assuming AZ would rule this out?

There's value in getting rid of a bad contract, but there's literally no need to give up a top 5 Cy Young candidate with 3 years of control, and a top 30 league wide prospect to do so. Bumgarner only has this year at 23m and next season at 14m left on his contract, that's hardly debilitating.

Yelich's value is so low he has more value holding onto him to see if his value can go back up a little. I wouldn't want to touch that contract, or have to give up prospects for him to bring in an ACE. I'd rather give Miami a call for Garcia/Soler even if the prospect price is a little higher; I'm assuming it's still going to softer than it would be without those outfielders.
I’ve wonders too about the Miami OFers. Hosmer is owed $39 Million while we only pay him the league minimum, maybe we could swap him and Soler and make the money work where we pay him less than $1M a year. I think roster wise each player is probably a better fit on the other team. Hosmer would probably waive his no trade to his hometown team and a starting gig.

Is that part of a bigger package that gets a discount on Lopez or something? Because otherwise I'm not sure why anyone would be interested in Soler. Regardless of positional needs, Soler is terrible.

How do you see Soler as the better fit? Seems like a RHH DH vs a LHH DH, both of whom are about league-average hitters. Although, if the Red Sox sign a LHH RFer, I could see the argument to balance the lefty/righty lineup.
