I'd imagine they'd want a combo of Bello, Casas, and Rafaela. Alek Thomas would be an interesting get, a young CF with a good hit tool. He only batted .231 last year but has hit over .300 at every stop in the minors. He'd cost less than Reynolds but I can't imagine that Arizona gives him away for nothing. Maybe Mata and Murphy?

Ya, I was just playing around in Trade Simulator looking at Reynolds, and it seems like it would be a rather painful trade in terms of prospect cost. I'm not sure the Red Sox would want to part with what it might take.

Yorke+ in a buy low swap Otherwise buzz off. Glove falling off, above average bat now looking closer to average, Reynolds is no sure thing. So if the ask is still very high, it’s a no for me. The Pirates should have traded him by now, so they’re losing leverage over time. Would hope we kick the tires

I’d be happy with either. Jake McCarthy - Fangraphs

It's interesting they're even talking about Reynolds and Murphy. Clearly they're willing to trade some top prospects if they can find a deal that works.

A lot. He would fetch a massive package because he is under control for 3 more years, you are probably trading 2 of Mayer/Casas/Bello/Bleis/Yorke. On baseball trade values, a trade of Casas and Yorke gets you most of the way there, and that is the only trade that makes any sense to me because Hosmer can play 1B and they have a pretty solid group of middle infield prospects that Yorke could be considered expendable. If the Pirates would go for something like that I am not sure how I would feel. Would you rather have Hosmer and Reynolds, or Casas and Refsnyder/Haniger/etc.? I have been beating the Nimmo drum for a while that way they can just hang onto their prospects and still get someone who approximates Reynolds' production, but everything I am reading seems like Nimmo's market is going to be really strong.

Having a mediocre player like Hosmer does not make Casas expendable. They'd be better off simply signing Comforto for RF. I really don't get the concept that Hosmer's presence means that you don't need Casas around. Casas looks like a guy who will settle in as least a .260 hitter with a lot of walks and at least 30 HR potential, all at a minimum baseball wage. The Sox need more guys like this, not trade away guys like this. Hosmer is a guy the Padres have been trying to dump for years. Why the desire to play him every day? It's like worshipping mediocrity.

I don't disagree with anything here. I'm really not a fan of Hosmer and never have been. But it all depends on if you think Hosmer can be a starting 1B. Hosmer is bad, no question - but if he is good enough to at least start without being a completely dead weight? Then that means you have 2 first baseman capable of starting, which means you can use Casas to upgrade elsewhere. The way I'm looking it, which of these lineups would you prefer? Kiké CF Reynolds RF Xander SS Devers 3B Story 2B Verdugo LF Dalbec DH Hosmer 1B Wong/McGuire C Or Kiké CF Devers 3B Xander SS Casas 1B Story 2B Verdugo LF Dalbec DH Refsnyder/Haniger RF Wong/Mcguire C I realize there are a lot more options than I'm presenting here but it's just to illustrate a point. If Hosmer is not good enough to be your everyday 7/8 hitter, then you can't send away Casas. But if he is then Bloom should at least explore it I think.

Dalbec as DH? I think this is his last shot to show what he did at the end of 2021. If not, he'll be traded or demoted.

I get the concept, but basically you're trading a major core piece as I believe Casas to be for another major core piece, one who is more expensive and you have less years of control over. It's trading an asset for an asset rather than adding another asset to an asset. I think downgrading 1b to upgrade the outfield is robbing Peter to pay Paul.

After April he hit .272 avg, .353 OBP with a .485 slg% good for a 134 wRC+. 2019-2022 his defense was fine, maybe he did suddenly become terrible, but I would gamble that it was a fluke 1 year sample. Plus he has a good arm.

Kiké Hernandez does not profile as a not a lead-off hitter. He is a #8-9 in a good line-up at best. The urge to use him there and give him the most ABs is beyond ill-advised. Connor Wong is also not an MLB catcher. That was painfully obvious in his starts. It will become more obvious with the new rules about pitcher pick-offs, which will likely increase throws to second by catchers.

It will become more obvious with the new rules about pitcher pick-offs, which will likely increase throws to second by catchers. I was just throwing these out as an idea of what a Reynolds/Hosmer lineup would look like. Regardless of who is leading off or DHing, I think everyone would agree that Hosmer wouldn't be batting anywhere higher than 7, and Reynolds would be somewhere in the top 3 or 4. Can a lineup like that be one of the top scoring offenses in baseball? I think it maybe could, yes. Another way to look at it is, who would you rather have as your everyday 7/8 hitter - Hosmer at 1B, or Refsnyder/Haniger (or another budget OF) in RF? And if you choose the OF, is the dropoff in production you get by rolling with Hosmer greater than the increase in production you get by adding in Reynolds? If it were up to me I am probably just keeping Casas and flipping Hosmer for whatever I can. But I still want Bloom to run the numbers on this sort of thing, and if they think Hosmer and Reynolds is a good team, don't be afraid to pull the trigger.

I'd guess it's either McCarthy or Varsho that's available in a deal. I'd have to think that Corbin Carroll and Alek Thomas are most likely to be the guy that Arizona hangs onto given their pedigree. I'd prefer McCarthy to Varsho.

Varsho is going to require an absolute haul, no? 4 years of control, above average defender with power, should cost more than Reynolds

Don't know much about McCarthy's pedigree, but man, there seems to be some major red flags in his game from his 2022. His AAA numbers are from playing in Reno, so that muddies the waters even more.

Just saw his hard hit rate and AV exit velo, yeeesh Seems like he can run so maybe that elevates his average despite the relatively weak contact

Nah, I'd rather simply sign Comforto than give up any significant talent for Varsho. I do like Alek Thomas if he's available. I think he could be a good leadoff guy if the Sox don't sign Yoshida, and Thomas is a young CF. I just don't think he'll be available or at least I wouldn't make him available if I were the Dbacks.

I like Varsho a lot too, he’d likely cost too much as you said
Love the idea of sprinkling in some games at catcher for him too. He can be the teams 3rd catcher and starting RF

Arozarena is due a raise in arb, I wonder if we could pry him from the Rays

If we can pull of a Reynolds deal it would be almost to good to be true. Keep 3 guys Mayer/Bello/Rafaela. If you can resign X, trade Casas in a deal for Reynolds and go scoop Abreu we can groom X for the future at first when one of the SS is ready and Abreu leaves. Also Kiké is gone after next season and hopefully Rafaela steps right in.
Kiké Reynolds Bogaerts Devers Abreu Verdugo Story Hosmer/Arroyo McGuire/Wong
Thatâs a GREAT lineup. With Arroyo backup INF and Refsnyder backup OF. All that needs to be done is resign X trade for Reynolds and sign Abreu. Doesnât sound hard. Then take whatever money is left and bolster the P staff.

So, long time lurker really. Enjoy reading the back and forth on here a great deal. I’ve been thinking about this and it is probably completely mental…but with the Angels ownership situation how crazy is asking about Mike Trout? I know he’s getting more injury prone and ageing but I think the hit tool will age well, RF would be fine for now and you can rotate him through DH to help protect him as well. He’s paid what he’s worth at the moment, so don’t think it would cost the world in prospects either. That said he has a no trade but he “feels” like a guy who would get Boston too.
