I don’t see how Sean Murphy and Bryan Reynolds are comparable players in value like some folks are saying here. Like who is out there and available that is even close to what Murphy pulls off playing a premium position?? I don’t get the “premium position” thing. Which are the non-premium positions? 1B, LF, RF, and DH.

I mean, the catcher virtually controls the game. They manage the pitching staff, they make pitching calls (most of the time), they’re the most active defender on your squad, and boy, if they can square em up with the bat, that sounds like a pretty premium position compared to a corner OF.

That is fine, but their offense is relative. The “non-premium” positions listed above are, funny enough, our weak spots. No DH, rookie 1B, and sub-par OF. So a catcher who is a decent hitting catcher will cost a lot… but provide no more offense than an average DH, which we need and could acquire for a lot less. Defensively, we have two guys that we traded for in Wong and McGuire. I hope to god one of them can play good defense.

Before we start shipping off cost-controlled, major league caliber players, consider the following:
PLAYER A: .304/.378/.446
PLAYER B: .197/.358/.408
Player A was just signed to a 3 year / $60M deal as a 35 year old FA (who is soon to be 36). Player B is Triston Casas at age 22 in the major leagues. He will cost $700K next season.
PLAYER B: 95 PA. I'm high on Casas's bat, but a ~3 week sample is probably not very predictive, especially for a young guy the league hasn't had a chance to adjust to yet. It's more than reflected in his price. He represents 3.5% of Abreu's AAV. And Casas hasn't had a chance to adjust to the league yet, either. He put up a .766 OPS with a .208 BABIP.
Trading him for Murphy (a position of low need relative to OF, SS and SP) seems foolhardy.

I do agree that I wouldn't trade him for Murphy. I'd consider him in a package for Reynolds, though.

Generally true but at Fenway RF leans heavily toward a premium position.
