www.jospt.org/doi/10.2519/jospt.2019.8215 seems like this is a surgery that basically exists only for baseball players, as a speedier TJS replacement. It says 5 months to get back to playing, so like June 1st return I guess?

Yeah 4-6 months. Why did they wait until now?

Oooof… well, if this solves the elbow issue, then get it done. I’d imagine a slick infielder like Iglesias is a must now.

I guess signing a guy with a bad elbow is all about getting his age 32+ seasons anyway.

Well that's not great. Significant time missed to injury in the first two years of his contract and no real good replacements left on the FA market.
Certainly would have been nice to have done this back in October...

Maybe Story aggravated his elbow while preparing for shortstop/testing his arm strength? No other reason for it to wait until now…

Story might have hurt himself recently, but there's also a long history of players and teams butting heads over what to do about a jacked UCL.

He must of injured the elbow further while training. He was putting in work it looks just a few weeks ago.

This is exactly what this team did not need. If the season started tomorrow it would be what, Arroyo at SS and Hamilton or Valdez at 2B? We already needed a middle IF addition but now it's urgent.

I feel like this happens a lot that guys end up with TJ (or in this case TJ-adjacent) surgery at what seems like an inopportune time. Probably various reasons why that happens, but I'm sure Story and the team didn't expect it to be needed or they would have done it earlier.
It's not like he's a pitcher, I think it's reasonable they could have expected he would continue to play second just fine with some discomfort and could put off a real surgery.

Kiké at SS and Duran in center maybe? Either way yeah I think they should sign Andrus ASAP, and then maybe still try to trade for Wendle or something.

He was planning to be part of Team USA for the WBC, so it must have been a recent-ish injury.

Given that their next best option really is replacement level, this is... not good.

Does anyone here have any medical knowledge that might help us guess the fallout from this? Should we expect this to be a TJ-style surgery where once it's done his elbow will be in good shape and he will likely be able to return to SS? Or is this more a sign that his elbow will be a risk for the forseeable future and SS is likely out of the question?

Has there been a more predictable injury in recent years? Price’s elbow, I guess. Honestly did anyone expect Story’s elbow to hold up when he signed?

To take a step back and see what this really costs the team: Story's projection is 2.8 WAR in 151 games, if he misses 40 games due to this (roughly April and May), it costs him .74 wins, so he ends up about 2.1. If they can fill the slot with an above replacement level player the team shouldn't be expected to suffer too much from this.
Of course I think many of us were hoping Story could be better than that, in which case this stings worse, but still.
