That was a nice play, but I think he made it look harder than it actually was by stumbling a little at the end.

He covered some distance

Tough play at the plate, but Alfaro has looked bad in every aspect behind the plate other than arm strength. Framing, blocking, catching. If he makes the team he’ll be our Gary Sanchez… Alfaro can take a contract elsewhere. I think he is AAA emergency only. I would rather have Wong in the MLB day one. If there is an injury let them use Caleb Hamilton or someone else.

I saw him make a similar play while covering more distance when he played in Salem.

Feels like that one play is enough for me to feel confident that it'd go fine if they wanted to move him to LF.

That was a nice play, but I think he made it look harder than it actually was by stumbling a little at the end. You say he stumbled, it looks to me like he was getting down to the ball in a semi dive which is the same way I would have handled it as a long time OF. Looking frame by frame I see intention not s trip. YMMV. Regardless, it was a nice play and I agree with others that especially given the profile of the Sox minor league system I'd like to see Yorke in LF soon than later.

You do know we have a left-fielder, no?

You do know we have a left-fielder, no? Do you think that people are saying he should be the left fielder for the Boston Red Sox this year? Unless you think Yoshida's mere existence means we shouldn't attempt to develop more left fielders, to which I'd say.. 1. Yoshida has a grand total of 0 MLB plate appearances, while I am extremely optimistic about him, we don't actually know if he's a good MLB player or not. 2. If he really is as advertised, he should be a perfectly viable DH option for some games that Yorke can man left. 3. You can truthfully say the same thing about Yorke, if his bat hits he can DH some games just fine. 4. You never deny putting a prospect in their best position to succeed based on what you have at the MLB level unless you have a bona fide superstar at an inflexible position (like if the Orioles had another good catching prospect right now they'd probably be best suited exploring other positions for that player). Now all of this to say Yorke may very well be able to handle second, I don't particularly think he should be moved to left yet. But I also don't think it's a crazy idea because of Yoshida specifically.

You do know we have a left-fielder, no? Yoshida is a future DH. Justin Turner is essentially a one year guy. The fit is there for Yorke to take the LF spot if he pushes and hits in the higher levels of the system.

Because a bunch of scouts that dropped the ball on his hitting abilities are right about his fielding? I think he'll be at least average in LF. I'm a huge Yorke fan, but let's worry about Yoshi and him in LF when it happens. He may still be the future 2B. Who knows what happens with Valdez and Paulino and whoever else. Just the flexibility to play 2B and LF/RF will make him valuable if he's a major league hitter.

Sprint speed leaves a lot to be desired. I don't see that getting better in his 30's. His arm isn't great either. He kind of reminds me of JDM right when the Sox first signed him. Passable for now, but won't last long long-term.

His arm looked pretty damn good to me on that throw home when he nailed the guy at the plate. Didn't notice a ton of him moving in the outfield, but I don't he needs speed if he's smart and reads well. I'll take that wager. Maybe not for 6 years, but 3-4 at least.

Fast forward to 1:39 of the Yoshida play. The throw wasn't great. The runner was on third base by the time Yoshida got to the ball in short LF. Yoshida was charging and he still one hopped it up the third base line. It was a bad send. Maybe his arm is better than I personally think, but we'll see. Either way, 3 years sounds about right. That's about as long as JDM lasted in Boston in the outfield.

By OAA JD would have been about a -12 in 2018 had he played a full season in left, the only LF who played a full season there last year who was worse was Kyle Schwarber. I would be very surprised, just based on his general athleticism (from what I've seen in limited view), if Yoshida is the worst defensive LF in baseball, but I think we'll know the answer to that pretty shortly into the season.

Not like, 80 grade arm or anything. But a good throw. It's like 3 feet off to the right. I think you are falling for some confirmation bias.

Lol how is that not a good throw? Again, it's not even plus probably but that's certainly at least an average arm.

"Should put Yorke in LF this season. Second base not best fit if he can track fly balls like that." Yeah he has a track record of being a shaky second baseman for years now. I want him playing LF full-time for Portland/Worcester. Not Boston. He can't be any worse defensively if he's put in a better position to succeed defensively. He looked like he could move out there.

Okay looks like I was conflating different thoughts into different posts-
-I argued in my opinion, that the Yoshida throw wasn't great in one play. I'm not the only person who's thought this (maybe on here I am).
-Yoshida could have a better arm possibly, than I think.
-Yorke's future isn't second base if you want a good defensive infield.
-Yoshida could be a averageish LF (for now) even with a bad arm, if he can move well enough.
-Yorke could be a good LF with range (if he can move well), with a bad arm.
-Duran is ahead of Yorke in the depth chart so Yorke isn't even on the radar yet (unless Duran fails/better off as trade bait).

What a wonderfully athletic play. This made me sad. I only got to watch him play one minor league game in person (he was fresh off a promotion to Pawtucket and very new to playing OF) and he was sooo much fun to watch in that game.
