I didn’t get to watch any ST games, so I’m pretty interested to see the new rules in effect.
Casas is the player I’m most interested to watch. I’m hoping for big things from him. Verdugo is my favorite* player this year, so I am hoping for a big season from him. I’m really nervous about the health of the pitching staff.
*favorite is the guy that I find the easiest to root for. I like how he takes joy in success on the field.

1990 to 2002 I went to probably every opening day. Still feels weird to not go, but was always such a blast.
Yoshi and Casas show up today and show this team is not so bereft of talent as everyone says. We'll see if pitching can hold up since the depth is already stretched. Sox hold an early lead and win 5-4. First of 91!

Seems like Sox/Balt games are blacked out on MLB.com - so I may be listening today. That's fine - as an old dude, listening to games works fine for me - very nostalgic!

If everything breaks perfectly, this could be a dangerous, winning team. Then again, I think we could say that about 18-20 teams in MLB. Here's to it all breaking right and World Series Championship season!

We're fanatics on this board, but judging by ticket availability and prices on Stubhub, there's a lack of interest in the Nation like we have not seen in years. There are plenty of decent GS seats available for way below face value. Ditto for other sections, too. And I mean, this is Red Sox Opening Day at the hallowed Fenway.
Remember the scene in Fever Pitch where a guy offers up his wife to Jimmy Fallon in return for some tickets? That guy probably wouldn't even offer up an annoying girlfriend for tickets to see the 2023 RS.
Seriously, unless they get off to a great start we're going to see more empty seats than we are used to seeing. They don't have the advance sales in the books to sell the place out every night.

Windy, below freezing temps, and you need to use a vacation day. Let's pump the brakes on empty stadium talk

I keep checking the transactions page to see who is going to be dropped so Tapia can be added.
I have some hope for this team, every spring foments some hope, but I also have my share of reservations, most of them surrounding the pitching staff. I saw a LOT of hard contact in ST, and Houck giving up 9 (checks stat sheet) yes, 9 home runs doesn't give me the warm fuzzies.
Let's hope some of these guys were just working on new things.
1-6 this lineup is pretty solid, it gets a little thin after that, especially if Kiké lays an egg offensively. But I think either way this will be a fun team to watch most nights.

I watched most of them and it was actually better when the kids were still around because you got to see some of the prospects in action and feel a twinge of excitement. For the most part they looked ok, the position players, Kiké didn't hit that well, but he was clearly an upgrade defensively almost immediately. Some of the pitchers we are going to rely on got rocked though, and that is my main concern. Casas is an interesting and weird dude, he's going to be fun to watch for a long time.

But when the Pats are good you can't get a seat. I didn't say empty stadium. I'll be going to a game myself in two weeks. But the days of a banged-out Fenway every night with tickets selling way above FV are gone, at least for now. And not wanting to use a vacation day is now a reason people don't go to Red Sox OD at Fenway? I've gotten emails nearly every day the last two weeks or so pushing ticket sales. I even got a phone call from a rep asking me whether I was interested in packages of various games. That didn't used to happen. The power was with the seller. Now it's with the buyer.

Here's to it all breaking right and World Series Championship season! Don't say "breaks" in a conversation about a team with Sale and Paxton on the pitching staff! I have a habit of looking at each year's Red Sox team and thinking about which year we might see 2.0. If this year brings a title, the obvious analogy would be 2013. If it's a big disappointment, it's 1997.

Weird, the final home game at Gillette was nearly empty last season, and you expect it to be cold in the winter, there's also 8 home games in football, not 81. And yes, vacation days are precious, not and for most people, sparce.

This is such a pleasing lineup on paper. K rates for the 2022 season below:
Verdugo RF: 13% Devers 3B: 19% Turner DH: 17% Yoshida LF: 8% (NPB) Duvall CF: 32% Casas 1B: 22% (24% in 95 MLB PA & 21% in 317 AAA PA) Arroyo 2B: 16% McGuire C: 20% K. Hernández: 18%
Bench: Wong C: 23% (29% in 56 MLB PA & 23% in 355 AAA PA) Chang IF: 31% Refsnyder OF: 26% Tapia OF: 19%
In 2022, the Red Sox as a team had a 22% K rate. Only one guy in the starting lineup is worse than that, and this is just in time for the shift ban that makes contact more valuable. They're going to be fun to watch at the dish and, I think, successful.

It's weird, people complain about high ticket prices, then dunk on the team when tickets are cheap... Go to the game man, get off the internet and see the game in person

Finally .. we're here! Go Sox!!! I look forward to the game and the realization that the daily rhythm of BB is back in my life after a cold winter (Ok, so this winter wasn't that cold, but still.) But a special treat for me will come later today and tomorrow when large, full-color, high-res photos of the opener and the festivities start popping up. Yaz, Pedro and Papi will be on the field before the game, I'm sure. There might players from our other Boston teams on the field. We'll see a stunning, high-res photo of the first HR of the season, a big swing by Raffy, Yoshi's first hit, Cora barking out instructions to someone or setting an umpire straight. Good stuff.

Feel like this season hinges on the health of the rotation and and productiveness of Casas and Duvall at the plate.
The bullpen could sneak up on us as a weakness.
Excited for it to all start finally

I'm really looking forward to this season. The Sox probably won't be very good but what is a lot more interesting to me is to see how Yoshida the young players develop. Will Bello come back and be okay. Anything from the elbow down is always reason to worry. There are also the upper minor highly ranked prospects to wish on. A hugely important year for the Sox future.

Have a weird feeling the Sox might sweep Baltimore.
I remember how pathetic the Orioles were in 1988, losing their first 21 games. So I wasn't surprised when the O's won their opener in 1989 - against the Sox - just because baseball is weird like that. Turned out the 1989 Orioles turned it around from 54-107 to 87-75 and challenged for the division and finished ahead of the 83-79 Sox.
I bring that up because the next year the Orioles regressed back to being terrible. Now I don't think that today's Orioles are exactly the same - the Orioles have a lot of good prospects so I do think they'll be a handful by next year, but I just think that the "magic" that they felt last year will not be there and I can see them getting off to a bad start.
And on the opposite end, the Sox had one of those years where nothing really went right, so maybe, with a new mix of players, they'll gel a bit and take advantage of a favorable early schedule. So I think the Sox will do well against the Orioles this series, possibly even sweep them. Just because of the weirdness of how two seasons can differ from each other.

It is hard to conceive of this being the 56th year of my Red Sox fandom. I don't feel that old (most days). Earliest memories - listening to games on AM radio from Pawtucket, RI in bed, having the game fade in and out. Sitting with my two granddads and watching games - seeing Santiago, Wyatt, Lonborg, Lyles and all pitch, Joe Foy, Tartabull, Andrews, Rico, Reggie and Yaz hit. Broken heart at what Julian Javier did in game 7. That's all 56 years ago.
Now here we are, a set of recent championships, some really stinky seasons - yet, hope, the Red Sox - and Baseball! I'll be out working in my garden with the game playing over my Pixel phone.

Two wives, a number of jobs, several states of residence (RI, Ct., Maine, back to Ct.) But through it all, there's the Red Sox.
