Y'know, that's not a bad comp at all. I think the only big difference is that Espinoza, to me, felt like a big injury risk looking at his size compared to his stuff, which kind of bore out. Although it was such big stuff that maybe the injury risk brought him back into the Bleis range a bit? (For those who don't recall, think Perales but with even bigger stuff and smaller.) They got 2.5 years of Pomeranz there, although my recollection, which is kind of confirmed by the trade analysis Ian wrote at the time, was that it was a very steep price to pay in a win-now deal, perhaps made a bit easier to swallow because the system was loaded in those days. We noted the deal allowed them to keep the Moncada, Benintendi, Devers trio, but that Espinoza was at the time better than Jay Groome (who signed the day of the trade!) and Michael Kopech. I'll add though that even since just 2016, the landscape for trading minor leaguers below Double-A has changed drastically. I wonder if teams would make that deal today given the risk of exactly what happened to Espinoza happening. Teams want guys close to MLB now. Wasn't that also the deal, though, where the Padres were being sketchy about Pomeranz' medicals? You remember correctly. The Padres were reprimanded by MLB for not being forthcoming about his medicals and DD was given the option to send Pomeranz back to SD but he chose to keep him for the playoff run. www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2016/09/15/padres-suspended-connection-with-pomeranz-trade/IbV01YhnxtdnLvpZtkMwiL/story.html

Nice tidbit on Anthony calling him a “huge arrow-up prospect after (surprisingly) getting late-first-round money at 79th overall.”

Full McDaniel write up on Roman Anthony:
"Anthony, meanwhile, was a classic polarizing prospect whose stock dipped a bit after a couple of bad summer events (which teams heavily value because of the wood bats and strong competition) followed by a strong high school spring against decent competition in South Florida. He has one of the lowest chase and swing rates in the minors to go with the best age-adjusted exit velos in the minors, a strong bat-to-ball foundation and the athleticism to be a solid right fielder. He could stand to be a bit more aggressive and lift the ball more, but those are relatively easy adjustments."

One of the Fangraphs writers mentioned in their chat last week that it may be time to regard Anthony more highly than Bleis. Seems like he’s not alone in that thinking.

Apparently Anthony just passed Bleis within the last 6 days on Kiley's list, then? And presumably Bleis is just outside his top 50.

Wait, like the single best aged adjusted exit velo's in the minors?

Wait, like the single best aged adjusted exit velo's in the minors? BA said a couple weeks back his 90th percentile EV is 108 mph, which would be above average in the Majors right now and is absolutely elite for a teenage

He must be just absolutely murdering the worms down there.

Yeah he is hitting everything on the ground. Probably he is also a big time xwOBA underperformer if such a stat exists for the Carolina league. His best swings, one of which is in yesterday's game thread, look exactly like a major leaguer destroying a baseball.
One thing that probably doesn't matter is that he has made lots of really boneheaded outs on the bases.

Nobody can buy XBHs on that entire roster. I’m itching for some power from he and Bleis. Weird season in Salem. I’d expect the same as you given his EV and contact rate.

Friendly PSA that Salem's ballpark is widely considered way towards the pitcher friendly side of the spectrum, which suppresses XBHs, at least according to Chris & Ian.

Yes Salem has always been a pitchers’ park, but it’s hard to remember the lineup being starved to this extent offensively.

It could be a combination of rules/ball changes at that level too 🤷🏽 In addition to their no longer being a Lowell Roster (where many of these players would be in years past)

Eh, they've got a league average SLG despite playing in that park and with a lineup that's very young. There's just really not many teenagers that do much damage in full season ball. Even among major league regulars you don't find a lot of big time extra base totals when they were 18/19.

Anybody else think Rafaela’s season last year might have been a mirage? Is it time to sell high on him while Chaim can?

Anybody else think Rafaela’s season last year might have been a mirage? Is it time to sell high on him while Chaim can? If you’re asking that it’s likely too late. With his glove he is a high probability utility player so I see no reason to sell low or give up on him. There’s value in that especially at a low cost with a lot of control.
