Worth noting that Hamilton is also sporting the 14th best K% in the league. I really would like to see advanced batted ball data on him this year (I know Cundall has implied he’s getting lucky). His launch angle must be different. More LD and GB, fewer FB, and a lower K%, but is slugging more than ever. He’s 25.5 years old and this is only his 17th game, so I’m not inclined to believe this is some crazy breakthrough, but I’d love to be convinced otherwise. |

There's quite a misalignment between Hamilton's being protected on the 40-man and this site's evaluation of him as having a "ceiling of an up-and-down utility type."
In his last 200 PAs he's hit .349/.437/.556, a 166 wRC+. That's with a 13% BB rate and .207 ISO. It's not all BABIP...

I think he only needs to give you a 650 OPS before you start getting happy to have him in the lineup on a minimum salary, and that's no longer looking all that optimistic.

He’s missed a couple years of development due to injury and covid, he could simply be a late bloomer as a result of that

I didn't make this clear, but my point was that it sure looks like some sort of switch flipped last August.
If the defense is as poor as this site says then I'm not sure a .650 OPS quite cuts it, but the bar isn't that high at 2B and obviously his speed adds a lot. A .700 OPS would definitely cut it, though...

RE Hamilton:
The issue is that he's not a defensive SS. If he was, he'd probably be a lot better regarded. Reports are that he's bottom of the scale in terms of arm strength and that he's not exactly fluid out there.
CF, where his speed would play up is the eventual destination if he's a regular. Otherwise it's a utility role.

I think he did play some last year, must’ve just been bad Duran was also bad (and still is) and they've stuck with him out there, and Hamilton might be even faster, so curious if either Hamilton is better in the infield than Duran was, or worse in the outfield, or both. |

Hamilton playing OF makes too much sense, he must be absolutely clueless out there to not get more of a look
My best guess is that he's fine as a major league 2B.

Might be about time to see what Mata looks like in relief imo I think this is the year, but I think you gotta give him a little more time too. Maybe later this summer. Could be a key addition down the stretch |

I think he did play some last year, must’ve just been bad Hamilton played two full games in CF for Portland last year, and had no time in the OF in his milb career before that. 4 putouts total. |

Hamilton's a lot more impressive if you think of him as a guy who made his professional debut less than two years ago (which is true). I do respect Ian's scouting, though. We'll have to see if he can keep it up, & if the Red Sox will give him a chance to play a position he's more likely to stick at. Right now, they seem to be prioritizing Valdez. |

If you see Mata’s eventual fit with the big league club as a late innings arm and not as a mercurial starting pitcher, how do you decide when the benefit of preparing for that late inning bullpen role in AAA outweighs the benefit of throwing more innings and facing more batters by continuing on in a AAA starting role?

Nice outing from Isaac Coffey: 6IP 4H 2ER 0BB 8K He seems intriguing. Good start to the season for him Some draft notes on Coffey say that he doesn't throw particularly hard (~89-90mph in limited Trackman sample) but that he throws from a low release point with outlier release coordinates both vertically and horizontally. So he actually kind of throws hard for someone with his release point and the FB itself has lots of horizontal movement. His slider also apparently has a ton of movement as well. Perhaps the craziest thing about his profile is that he can throw strikes reasonably well despite this profile with lots of movement from a funky release. Has anyone seen him throw this year to back any of this up? |
