This has me feeling a bit better about his bat than I have been leading up to the draft.

I really wanted Nimmala but I can’t be mad about this pick. the fact it’s one of the biggest weaknesses in the whole system makes it such a blessing. Love this kid’s personality. Can’t wait to see him play.

Assuming he signs where do we think Teel slides in to the rankings? Is he the highest rated C in system now I would imagine? The 6/7 range would be the plausible spot, initially.

How does he compare to Henry Davis? Only asking based on both being the top college catcher in their draft.

How does he compare to Henry Davis? Only asking based on both being the top college catcher in their draft. Teel is more likely to be a net positive behind the plate. As most prospect outlets rate Davis as a 40 in the field. Though Davis has considerably more raw and in-game power than Teel.

All his hr this year. Looks like he will not soon hit many in the bullpen, but he may pepper that wall.

I was trying to find a montage of his helmet flying off, but you basically get that with every highlight video.

He reminds me a bit of Schwarber with the violence of his swing to all fields, but will hopefully translate better contact all around. I am psyched.

In terms of ranking, I think Teel will actually slot anywhere in the 3-6 range in our system among most national outlets. I don't want to speak on behalf of this site, because SP can take a more conservative approach with monthly updates and a preference to get live looks before ranking aggressively. That said, I think things are trending such that Mayer (consensus top 20) and Roman Anthony would be our consensus top 100 prospects right now across all major national ranking outlets. Then, a tier of Rafaela, Yorke, and Bleis will have some support and might make a top 100 list or two but are unlikely to be consensus top 100 guys. I think Teel being a consensus top 10 talent in this strong draft, will also fall into the fringe top 100 tier so I'd put him right there in that 3-6 range. Of course, things can change between now and the end of the season with guys like Romero, Perales, and Wikelman capable of finishing strong and also being part of that tier.

As we said on the pod that just dropped last night, 6-8 range with Drohan and Perales for me and Ian, at least.

I wonder if Teel is a high GB% guy right now because the batted ball data here is better than I would have thought looking at his slash

Red Sox didn't even need to tank to get their guy. I like it. I understand he's not much of an upside guy, but should be a big leaguer. That best case scenario is a regular whose an occasional all-star with the down side of a backup?

That best case scenario is a regular who’s an occasional all-star with the down side of a backup? Where are you getting the idea that he’s not an upside guy? The dude just hit over .400 on a CWS team and plays a premium position. Rough estimations of basic stats are never super great but if he hits .280 with 15-20 homers and plays a good catcher then he’s probably one of the 5 or so best at his position in the game. And I wouldn’t even call that his 80th percentile outcome.

I also heard that exact sentiment on the radio which seemed to reinforce my preconceived notion.

I think I see your problem. Also 55 is quite good! That's the grade SoxProspects.com gives to Mayer, for example. Fangraphs only has 42 players on their prospects board with ratings of 55 or above: 28 55s, 12 60s, and 2 65s. They haven't incorporated the new draftees yet, but still, it gets the idea across.

So, I'm completely sold based on everything that I've read and what everyone is saying on here. Didn't realize that 55 was considered top tier despite the rankings going to 80 (not being snide).
With that said, can we play the game of, "why did he slide"?

With that said, can we play the game of, "why did he slide"? I think it’s mostly teams drafting early going for ceiling rather than a high floor. That’s why I didn’t want the Sox to take him, but as I said above his EV data was better than I expected. Platoon splits are another issue, but I’m not sure that really contributed much to his “slide”.

With that said, can we play the game of, "why did he slide"? Yeah, 80 isn't "as good as you find in a typical draft," it's more "as good as the best you've ever seen." It doesn't come by very often.

I remember really liking Henry Davis as a possible draft pick in 2021 (though was even happier with the way things actually turned out!). A quick comparison of his college numbers to Teel's, FWIW:
Davis Age 19: .280/.345/.386 in 148 PAs Age 20: .372/.481/.698 in 52 PAs (covid year) Age 21: .370/.483/.663 in 228 PAs Overall: .337/.435/.566 in 518 PAs
Teel Age 19: .335/.416/.526 in 238 PAs
Age 20: .276/.402/.439 in 277 PAs Age 21: .407/.475/.655 in 297 PAs Overall: .343/.433/.547 in 812 PAs
The overall lines are virtually identical. Teel had a down year as a sophomore but his junior year was right in line with Davis'.
Of course Teel seems to be the much better defensive catcher. Makes me wonder if he would have been the higher-ranked prospect if they were in the same draft (is 2023 that much deeper than 2021?)... or if not, I wonder why. I am of course aware that a lot more goes into the evaluations than the slash line...
