In terms of the offseason, I feel like that is going to be very dependent on what version of Luis Urias the Sox get the next two months... But if it's magically something like 2021 Urias (or even a tick up from 2022).. that would be another classic Bloom "diamond in the rough" play. He had 1000 PAs in 2021-22 with a 112 wRC+ in 2021 and a 110 in 2022. Then he was injured at the start of 2023 and had a bad 68 PAs. Assuming the injury is behind him (and in his last 70 PAs in AAA he has a .900 OPS) the pretty strong assumption ought to be that he should return to his 2021-22 form. No magic needed! Hah I totally believe there is a definite possibility of him returning to that form, but 70 PA in AAA is a small sample size.. particularly when it's AAA and not the MLB. However, I do love to hear that it was those last 70 PA he was really starting to figure it out, because I did just see that .233/.345/.379 slash line in 29 games in Nashville and was not totally sold. I LOVE the OBP and walk rate though. Hope he walks a couple times tonight and hits a bomb off Manoah!

My dearest Christian Arroyo,
Over the past 4 years we have gone through the highest highs and the lowest lows together. From your iconic nuke of a grand slam in Atlanta to some frankly miserable at bats this year, there is nobody else with whom I would rather experience Red Sox baseball.
I will miss your passion, square head, and glorious beard that gets marginally longer every season. Nobody else’s character will ever come close on and off the field.
I will miss you dearly.

If you take out all the small samples you’re right back to 2+ WAR Urias

I mostly liked the Christian Arroyo experience. Thanks for the memories!

While not a sure thing that this trade for Urias will be a success, the lack of attention and respect for the move in the media reaffirms why I am so happy to have Bloom leading our baseball operations.
We got a former top 15-35 prospect in MLB with above average 2B defense who performed above 2 WAR in each of his first two full MLB seasons at age 23-25. He got hurt on a fluke play diving headfirst into 1B on opening day this year (showing extreme competitiveness in the process) and is just now ready to go after performing at a .900 ops in AAA while getting his timing back. He was a strong player for Mexico in the WBC this year and a great teammate there for Verdugo and Duran. He hit the game winning 2 RBI single with two outs to eliminate Puerto Rico and then hit a 3-run homer with two outs to break a scoreless tie in the semifinals against the eventual champions' star pitcher Sasaki (the home run went over new teammate Yoshida's head in left field). He averaged over 20 HR/yr in his age 24 and 25 seasons. He is a pull hitter who will love the green monster. He is under team control for two more seasons after this year. We traded a fringe prospect who needed to be, though was unlikely to be, protected in this December's Rule 5 Draft.
This is an awesome move.
I have not heard much praise for the trade from press. The Red Sox upgraded in a significant way at their biggest position of weakness without giving up much and did so in a team controlled way that helps this year and for the next couple of years while Yorke, Mayer, Romero, Refaela etc make their way to the show.
If Urias can play at the level he did as a 24 year old, this is an amazing move. If he can enter his prime here as a 26-28 year old by taking a step forward from his two first full seasons, the Red Sox just added to the emerging core in a big way while giving up almost nothing. Valdez and Hamilton are intriguing potential platoons with him next year if need be and if either of them can take a step forward.
Anyhow, the more I look at it, the more I love the move. And I love how everyone just says the Red Sox essentially did nothing at the deadline, similar to the reaction when Bloom traded Aldo Ramirez for Kyle Schwarber in 2021. Two under the radar pickups with hamstring injuries clouding their seasons and the upside when healthy. Would not be shocked if the Urias trade plays out even better over the next season or two, as we have more team control and the positional fit is just right as Story also prepares to come back at SS in the next week.
Let's go!

I liked Arroyo and think one day he'll wind up as one of the NESN crew as he has the personality for it - very likeable.
But he never took the next step forward.
He proved he had an average hit tool or a bit better and showed he had a bit of pop. And I thought he was a decent defensive 2b.
But he always had injury issues and his only path forward to stick around was to seize the 2b job that was there for the taking and he was never really able to which is a shame because he had a golden opportunity to do so.
So now Urias gets a chance. I'm not convinced his hit tool is as good as Arroyo's although based on his minor league track record it should be.
I cant understand why a guy consistently hitting above. 300 in the minors can't muster a .250 average in the majors thus far.
But Urias did supplement his low average with good power and the plate discipline that Arroyo sorely lacked. I'm guessing he's better defensively?
I guess its worth a shot but it's not a given that Urias is going to work out. If his hit tool cant be near average he'll eventually struggle to keep his job, but like Arroyo, he had a good prospect pedigree. Will he fully reach it it get close enough as he had previously to be an upgrade? Probably, but I'm in a wait and see mode.
I'm also not convinced that Blalock is JAG, but he could be, so that remains to be seen.
