I think Teel is pretty much can't miss, barring his body breaking down. Good pop times + pitch framing means there's almost no pressure on his bat. He needs to be putting up OBPs well south of .300 to not be any good. He's got a fast bat and a good approach, I'm not seeing how he would end up a total disaster on offense.
I'm not saying he'll be a star, but .240/.310/.350 with his defense is already like a 2 WAR player.

Honestly if he rakes the rest of the season and starts out at AA next year, then 2025 doesn’t sound too far fetched to me.
Especially if they deem him ready defensively by that time

Meanwhile, Padres fans are salivating at the notion that their 17-year-old wonder kid ( I think it's 'wunderkind'?) could be behind the plate as soon as next year.

Keith Law mentioned him in his podcast multiple time. He said, defensively, the kid could start for half the teams in MLB right now. During extended spring training he was catching two veteran MLB pitchers rehabbing. Both said the kid already had MLB-level receiving and throwing skills and was like a sponge with information.

Good the padres can call him up next year and then lose him to free agency at 24 because all their money is tied up in aging talent

Dervish was one I believe.

The Friars spent $5.6M out of a pool of $5.8M for Salas, so quite the risk-reward situation there. So far so good.
Meanwhile Teel has been as great as hoped, and at a discount at 14 somehow, that's some savvy drafting!

Could Teel be platooning with Wong by middle of next year? Have two bazookas behind the plate.

Could Teel be platooning with Wong by middle of next year? Have two bazookas behind the plate. Mid next year seems aggressive to me. Then again his defense certainly seems like it'll be ML caliber sooner than later. Mcguire has two arb years left and I know he's no great C but he's fine as a backup to Wong I think for the couple seasons I think. Let Teel develop, no need to rush it. Then again if Teel forces the issue mcguire is easily expendable no doubt.

I think if the fate of Planet Earth was riding on next year's opening day series, Kyle Teel makes the roster. Calling him up means you're losing McGuire for nothing and starting Teel's service clock, so there's not really any incentive to rush him unless he plays spectacularly.
I could see then giving him a June 1st'ish promotion to AAA even if he's got like a 700 OPS. That would be bad news for Reese McGuire's dreams of a 2025 arbitration pay day.

Offensively, you can't tell much of anything until Teel records some time at AA. (cf Marcelo). Defensively, the biggest question may be how he can handle the pitching staff, a subjective trait.
I'd be a little more aggressive with Teel than usual, if circumstances permit it, because of his athleticism. He isn't like a lot of more wooden-legged catchers who have a lot less to lose in that regard over the years. I'd like to take advantage of as much of those prime physical years as I can, before the rigors of the position start to catch up to him.

Wong will still have some cost-controlled years left when Teel arrives. He'd be useful as a platoon partner and fill-in at other positions. He seems athletic enough to get reps at LF and 1B. We're going to need RHH platoon bats.

Could Teel be platooning with Wong by middle of next year? Have two bazookas behind the plate. It's aggressive, but there is a non zero chance of it happening. Plenty of players start the year in AA and finish it in the Majors. Just recently for the Sox: Rafaela this year, Casas and Bello last year. Crawford in 2021.

Fwiw, I wouldn't assume that Teel reaching AA so quickly means he'll rise to the majors just as quickly. At this point of the season in the post-SS-A minor leagues, High-A is probably about equivalent to what he saw in the ACC. This amounts to something of a "let's get him where he'll start next season" promotion. He will undoubtedly spend a good bit more time in AA and AAA than he did in Greenville, imo.

Sat right by the Sea Dogs bullpen in the outfield at Hadlock. Got to watch Teel go through some framing and pitch blocking exercises about 30-40 minutes before the game. Framing was focused on bringing the low pitches up. The blocking was interesting to see. Has maybe a slight temptation to pop up like he needs to pick it and bounce up to make a play. Resulted in a couple to the backstop during the exercise. Then he headed out for warm up tosses with Dobbins in the outfield before returning for the bullpen warmup with Dobbins. Interesting watching him feeling out Dobbins to understand the arsenal. His 3rd pitching staff since being drafted, but seems to be adjusting well.

Hard to know how much it mattered, but Dobbins had a good outing throwing to him. Didn't they used to track Catcher ERA? Seems like I haven't heard the stat discussed much of late.

Has anyone seen any advanced data on Teel’s pro debut? I saw somewhere that his exit velo’s weren’t great but they looked fine in college. I was curious to know if that was true or not, i haven’t been able to find anything concrete on it.

He had all of 114 plates appearances at three levels. I'm much more interested in the metrics this year.

They seemed on par with other guys in college so i don’t think it’s a long term issue, and I’m also curious if all the driveline hires will help with those sorts of things.
