Casas and drohan for soto and Musgrove something the Padres would do? Contingent on a soto extension. Why would the Red Sox do that though? It creates a hole at 1B that you had finally filled with a potentially elite young hitter, and you're taking on a 31 yr old pitcher with $80m left on a deal whose been dealing with shoulder issues. allows you to move Devers to 1st if necessary but primarily because you add a top of rotation arm signed to a reasonable deal

Musgrove has been battling shoulder injuries and is about to turn 31, may as well just pay Montgomery 20m a year instead and not give up Casas

If it's possible to add a Juan Soto, you do it. I personally don't think it would take Mayer, Anthony, Casas or Bello for one year of Soto. IMO, something like Duran, Yorke and Drohan would be possible. The Friars could also consider moving Cronenworth in the deal to cut payroll. His deal of 7 years/$80M (2024-30) starts in 2024, roughly $11.5M AAV.
I couldn't care less if Soto is a lefty, he'll turn 25 this month and is an elite bat. Not to mention, he played in 162 games this season, and put up a 130 wRC+ vs LHP (166 vs RHP).

It’d be sort of funny if Sox traded for Soto (historically good plate discipline) and sent out Rafaela as part of it, who’s like the polar opposite player

Wasn't sure where to put this but Tomase wrote an article about getting Soto which hey I'd be on board with. However his package was Mayer or Anthony, Bello and probably more. Should have known better than to click on that article, to me Soto isn't worth either Mayer or Anthony though if he'd sign an extension it'd be something to think about but adding Bello too? Come on. www.yahoo.com/sports/juan-soto-trade-could-revitalize-192931671.html

Not to mention his projected arb is $33M (per mlbtraderumors.com). If the Padres Plan To Reduce Payroll To Around $200MM as rumored, I think you could use the Verdugo trade as a reasonable blueprint. Something like Soto, Cronenworth and cash for X.

I'd love for Soto to be a Red Sox, but not by trading our best prospects. Especially Mayer and Teel. So the hope is he becomes a Free Agent the year after and we swoop in.
Anyway, I really would like the team concentrate on Yamamoto. Watching the playoffs, it is obvious without pitchers who can dominate good line-ups you might as well stay home or go to Vegas. I became more intrigued of our chances when I found we have someone on our roster who is a friend of this 25-year old stud.
We still need a righthanded power hitter!!

Jim Bowden not exactly the most reliable prognosticator but... this deal basically consists of:
1. an average OF on an expiring deal who has (alledgedly) worn out his welcome in the organization
2. a swingman whose nasty stuff hasn't translated into consistent results yet - still has 4 years of team control
3. a raw 20 year old pitcher with talent - whether he could be a future starter is still TBD
4. an incredibly talented OF prospect who has draw comparisons to Acuña but missed almost all of last year with injury
The first two (maybe even three) pieces I honestly wouldn't sweat moving for Soto, even as a rental. Bleis might be where you draw the line... unless you're able to negotiate an extension?

I think even without an extension I'd probably be alright doing that package for Soto, might try and pry Croenenworth or another piece out of SD if Bleis is involved.

"You can have Bleis, but we need a little more than just a dude who might walk in a year." Ha-Seong Kim's expiring - or the last three years of Wacha's deal? EDIT: Okay fine, give the Padres whatever they want:

If /\ is TRUE, then make a reasonable offer now or just wait a year and get in FA.

I'd do that, which probably means it won't happen. Perales would be a tough loss, and I love Bleis but am glad to trade him for a long-term OF, especially with Rome in the wings. I'll send money with Doogie if it helps the salary cutting.

He's a slugger for sure but HARD pass for me. He was asking for 300+ while still on Nationals. Before 300+ contracts were this common. After a 5 WAR season what is it going to take to sign him? He is not a great teammate and just seems to me like the kind of player who will never perform to the level of the contract. Add the players it would take to acquire him and the fact he is another LH hitting LF and it doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Not saying you're incorrect but where are you getting that he's not a great teammate from? I've never seen anything of the sort written about him but I'm not well versed in Washington and San Diego columnists who would know better than I I think he got caught up in some of the mud slinging at the end of the Padres season. The specific I remember was he wouldn’t talk to Melvin without Boras around but believe there was more. An eyebrow raiser for me, if true

I think the Sox will be after Ohtani but if they dont get him I could see the Sox going after Soto with the intent of extending him.
Not sure what it'll take. I'd think one of Duran or Rafaela would be dealt. Perales likely would go assuming they want a pitcher. I could see a guy like Bleis or Cespedes or the promising young catcher Garcia being a part of the deal.
Maybe the deal would be Duran, Perales, Cespedes, and Dalbec for Soto and a reliever, perhaps Scott Barlow, a 4 for 2.

IMO Soto makes way more sense to give a big money long term deal to. Only 25 yrs old, already one of the best hitters in the league and I don't we've seen the full extent of his abilities yet. Ohtani is older (29), will likely cost more, is strictly a DH and has surgery coming which will prevent him from pitching next season. Furthermore, this will be his 2nd significant pitching arm surgery. Who knows how he will look on the mound after this one and how much more time he'll be able to pitch. Ohtani is an incredible player, he just doesn't make sense for this team. Soto is a guy who can help you now and grow with the rest of the young players on the team and those coming from the minors soon.

I'd agree about Ohtani. Great talent, lots of money, older, DH.
This topic to me is about getting back to having BIG talent...superior talent. I remember my first Spring Training game in Ft Myers and the old park. I was so fortuate to look out on the field that day and see Manny, Damon, Tek, and Nomar.
Who ever gets the top job, he/she needs to not be afraid of spending. Yes, spending wisely...but spending.
Yeah, Soto is my wish, but we need to start NOW making those major moves that were always so exciting. Heck, signing a Bellinger and moving Dugie would be a nice start.
I do believe Mayer and Anthony will be special players. But I want them starting to throw around the cash again. No idea what a 10-year extension (or longer) would cost for Juan Soto, but I'd like to see us throw our weight around once again.

Well this is gonna be interesting to see what Boston does with it's logjam of superfluous talent comin up the system. Maybe Bloom was fired for being a hoarder. Dombrowski was the expensive dream date. Now maybe Red Sox will finally get the right suitor.
Soto is way too expensive long-term to trade for. Soto is affordable even at over $45m/yr long-term when flanked in right by five years of Rafaela playing guaranteed Superman defense in center and perhaps some streaks of brilliant offense too for billions of pennies. Duran is a So. Cal. native. Duran is a proven offensive MLB player. He is someone who has overcome every baseball obstacle and imo is a leader, especially for a team/clubhouse/dugout looking for success. Would Sox be better with Duran in left, Rafaela in center, and Roman in right, plus cap room to get latest Japanese model stud pitching free agent, or have Soto, Rafaela, and anyone else in left field (hopefully Roman)?
Yorke's a Cali native -- is Story or Yorke the future at second with Mayer most likely at short? Padres could take their choice.
Throw in a Mikey, a pitching prospect, Dalbec (was he So. Cal. too?), and Padres have to nibble. Bloom definitely brought possibilities to Boston.

When some of the Soto trade rumors started, it was unclear if Preller was still going to be in charge in San Diego. He hasn’t exactly shown himself to be a completely rational actor. If it was just a matter of the Padres saying, “We’re probably not going to resign Soto, it’s time to take what we can get,” I think making a trade even without an extension in place is a lot more feasible. Right now? I have no clue what Preller would want - if he thinks he’s getting fired if SD doesn’t win next year, maybe he just says screw it and keeps Soto and lets him leave for nothing?

I've now seen an article on how The Yankees have had preliminary talks on Soto and another that The Cubs will be involved in the "sweepstakes". Not really any surprise there obviously but not sure I want to see the Sox get into any sort of bidding war for one season of Soto in terms of prospect cost. Then again the idea of Soto going to the Yankees is a rather scary thought since he's the exact hitter that would balance their lineup with his lefty bat and OBP skills. He'd also probably hit about a billion HRs in that little league park they call Yankee Stadium...

He'd also probably hit about a billion HRs in that little league park they call Yankee Stadium... You have to figure that a team that wants to trade for Soto with the intent of keeping him long term is prepared to part with higher quality prospects and is ready to make a godfather type offer to extend Soto, rather than a team who is looming to merely rent him. If the Yankees are involved I'd expect them to be prepared to have a 400 million plus offer in hand. If the Sox get involved they need to be prepared to do the same thing. I th9nk whoever gets him will be the highest bidder prospect value wise and if they're paying that price they're going to be serious about signing him. I could be very wrong but despite talk to the contrary I think Soto will wind up being traded and extended. I dont think he'll make it to free agency.

I like who they have coming up, so forget Soto and the rest. I would prefer them to get the Japanese pitcher. They need pitching more than anything, not hitters. Good starters are far more harder to find than outfielders.

I’d happily jump on this suggestion by Orioles GM Mike Elias’ burner account. (I’m kidding about the Mike Elias part…sorta)

I’d happily jump on this suggestion by Orioles GM Mike Elias’ burner account. (I’m kidding about the Mike Elias part…sorta) I do like the idea of selling high on Duran to acquire Soto. I'd prefer if it were part of a larger package that included Kim. Duran has been such a volatile player that he could end up being an annual 4+ WAR player for the next few years, or he could be a platoon guy. I'm not saying I don't value him at all, because he is super valuable and useful at his cost. I'd only deal him for a Soto or Tatis (a star player), but I guess I'm saying I would be ok dealing him.
