I originally didnt understand why Terry Francona didnt go to demoted starter Derek Lowe in what was a mop up situation in Game 3 of the ALCS. I guess pitching in a situation like that is considered embarrassing for a pitcher of Derek Lowe's stature, or Tim Wakefield's as well. Francona must have been hesitant to summon an already unhappy/upset pitcher like Lowe, but he didnt have to make the decision, because Tim Wakefield took that decision away from him because he volunteered to give up his Game 4 start to pitch in a lost cause Game 3 to go as long as he can just to preserve the pen for Game 4 and beyond if it went that far. Francona said afterward when they win Game 4 they'll have Wake to thank for that. Wake's sacrifice put the pitching staff back in order which loomed larger and larger as the Series went on. And yes, Wakefield picked up a key win in relief in Game 5. That was Tim Wakefield as a teammate, just like when he pulled himself off the 2007 World Series roster when he knew he didnt feel right and he didnt want to handicap the team. After the Sox swept the Series, Mike Timlin went on the air and said they did it for that man, referring to Tim Wakefield. Tim Wakefield, the guy who closed when they needed a closer, set up when they needed setup, mopped up when they needed mop up, and provided innings when they needed him to start which was most of the time, all at a baseball bargain rate because he was extremely loyal to the Red Sox. How he was as a teammate was how he was as a human being, kind, selfless, and caring. I was lucky to meet him once and already told my story in a different thread. I'm just glad I had a chance to meet him and thank him for everything. There will be 20th anniversary celebrations next year but his absence will hurt badly as we'll all miss him terribly. I didnt know Tim Wakefield but I kind of feel like I lost a member of the family. I think a lot of us here feel that way. RIP #49. This is perfectly said. We don't know these people personally but we feel like we do because they're in our living rooms every night for six months. We hear them speak. We get to know thier personalities. We learn about their families. When something like this happens, it hits hard. It felt the same when Jerry Remy passed.

Wakefield was very unique. He went on stretches where he would be almost unhittable for a few games every year. He ate innings and was the perfect #3-#4 pitcher on a staff. He seemed like a great and humble man that is rare in today's sports. RIP

There's a Create Thread link at the top right of the home page. RIP, Wake. You deserved better than to go out in a cloud of controversy that was none of your own doing.
Sorry, but I'm confused. I am not seeing a "create new thread" - can you or someone be of more help? You'll want to go to the top of the Forum. Once you're logged on, you should see that button on the far right. Hope that helps.

57 years old... too young to cash it all in, but he's gone. I did not know he'd been battling brain cancer.

Wrote multiple college papers about the knuckleball, inspired by Wake. What a cool dude. I will miss him.

What a shame. Wake pitched on a team full of truly unique, exceptional and likeable players. Yet he was always the most likeable among them, even when he was bad and inneffective. As someone above mentioned he seemed to always be humbly aware of how fortunate he was to be able to take the mound, that his career was in many ways miracolous.
His passing and the circumstances of it have me thinking of the best show on television that no one watched.
Wake thank you for all the joy you brought so many. Of anyone, you deserved to the right to be a Baseball Man.

Oh My god!! I had no idea he was suffering with brain cancer. He was a truly wonderful human being that did so much for charity with the Jimmy Fund and he will be sorely missed. I can't believe it. We were always complaining that he was the worst comentator after the games and now to hear this makes me think that was the reason he fumble his words so much. I feel terrible griping about it. Just never know because there was no clue he had that disease until mentioned recently that he was sick. peace be with you Tim and your family. I am in shock. The Red Sox have lost and icon that bled Red.

Man, we try to find a bright side when these horrific things happen. In this case, we know that Stacy's heart was broken and she had to have suffered immense physical and emotional pain from her own illness. All that hell is over for her now.
Still, this is jarring news. Let's hope their kids grow closer and stronger from all of this and go on to inspire others.
