Red Sox Facebook has posted that we have lost Tim Wakefield. Terrible news. I hope his family is surrounded by comfort and love.

RIP, Wake. You deserved better than to go out in a cloud of controversy that was none of your own doing.

Wakefield represented the best of the most recent Red Sox generation. First baseman who reinvented himself, gave up a devastating HR to Boone and came back the next year with crucial shutout extra innings. All of us are going to miss him

God bless. One of my favorite Red Sox players and, from all accounts, a really good guy.

Devastating - what a joy it was to watch and follow him over the years. Many of us tried (and failed) to throw knuckleballs as kids because of him.
I still remember the "who the heck is this" feeling I had each weekend at a kid in 1995 looking at the league leaders in the Globe on Sunday mornings and seeing his name up at the top.
Then there was the tension in 2004 prior to the Ortiz walk off when he kept us alive inning after inning. That sure made up for the 2003 series (when he probably would have got ALCS MVP had they won).

Oh my f*cking God this absolutely devastated me. I'm a sucker for a knuckleball and watching Wake pitch was like a baseball version of a D&D session with a very unnatural character. He was a nerdy dream, a misadjusted dream, truly one of us. Stuff that couldn't be possible, but somehow was.
Rest in peace Wake. You will be missed.

Wake represented so much of what is good about baseball. Tell the kids in your life about the converted first baseman we picked up on waivers who was a starter, closer, critical bullpen piece who was armed with a knuckleball and a Mirabelli, and who won 200 games. A great.

This one hurts. I’ll never forget game 3 when he ate those innings and gave up his game 4 start. I can only imagine how great a teammate he was. RIP.

Just looking back at Wake’s career… so amazing. 200 wins. Top-3 in ROY. Then nearly out of ball. Then Top-3 in CY. AS at 42. Two rings, including curse-breaker. And through all his ups and downs, the kind of teammate and class act that he was beloved by the home fans.

Stunning news. I assumed he was in the midst of an ongoing fight that would lsat months.
Wake struck me as someone who knew he was lucky to be a MLB player and financially set and felt an obligation to help those less fortunate. We need more like him.
I don't know the ages of his kids, but what a trauma. They've lost their father and their mother is in a huge fight.

I originally didnt understand why Terry Francona didnt go to demoted starter Derek Lowe in what was a mop up situation in Game 3 of the ALCS.
I guess pitching in a situation like that is considered embarrassing for a pitcher of Derek Lowe's stature, or Tim Wakefield's as well.
Francona must have been hesitant to summon an already unhappy/upset pitcher like Lowe, but he didnt have to make the decision, because Tim Wakefield took that decision away from him because he volunteered to give up his Game 4 start to pitch in a lost cause Game 3 to go as long as he can just to preserve the pen for Game 4 and beyond if it went that far.
Francona said afterward when they win Game 4 they'll have Wake to thank for that. Wake's sacrifice put the pitching staff back in order which loomed larger and larger as the Series went on. And yes, Wakefield picked up a key win in relief in Game 5.
That was Tim Wakefield as a teammate, just like when he pulled himself off the 2007 World Series roster when he knew he didnt feel right and he didnt want to handicap the team. After the Sox swept the Series, Mike Timlin went on the air and said they did it for that man, referring to Tim Wakefield.
Tim Wakefield, the guy who closed when they needed a closer, set up when they needed setup, mopped up when they needed mop up, and provided innings when they needed him to start which was most of the time, all at a baseball bargain rate because he was extremely loyal to the Red Sox.
How he was as a teammate was how he was as a human being, kind, selfless, and caring.
I was lucky to meet him once and already told my story in a different thread. I'm just glad I had a chance to meet him and thank him for everything.
There will be 20th anniversary celebrations next year but his absence will hurt badly as we'll all miss him terribly. I didnt know Tim Wakefield but I kind of feel like I lost a member of the family. I think a lot of us here feel that way.
RIP #49.

Sorry, but I'm confused. I am not seeing a "create new thread" - can you or someone be of more help?
