Gosh, Soroka’s value is just at the floor right now. Kind of wish the Sox had figured something out knowing that’s the case. Hope for his sake he can stay healthy.

What a weird trade. A decent middle reliever for four guys on the 40 who are DFA/nontender candidates. Not an inspiring first move for the new White Sox regime imo I dunno, I kind of like it for them. Even if the trade were just Bummer for Lopez (who had a 6 WAR season in 2021?!) I'd call it a fairly even swap of role players which seems to fill a need for the White Sox, and then they bought low on Soroka and a couple other guys too.

I just don’t think a contending team can go into a season with him penciled into the rotation. If he can go to Chicago and prove he’s healthy he could be flipped at the deadline.

Soroka's injury history is a combination of horrifying and depressing. Second in Rookie of the Year voting in 2019, 13 innings in 2020 until he tore his Achilles. Then he tore it, again. Then he tore it, yet again. Last season ended with right forearm inflammation.
Feel horrible for the guy.

Lopez was shopped all season and ended up getting traded at the deadline for a guy who was claimed off waivers a week prior, doesn't seem like the league thinks he has any value

When the White Sox declined the club option on Tim Anderson, it seemed like they were prematurely punting on the possibility of a rebound year. But if TA truly is cooked, at the very least you're upgrading from bad offense/bad defense shortshop to a shortshop who can't really hit but at least is a tremendous defensive upgrade - all while saving like 10-12 million bucks.

Rays trade Vidal Brujan and Calvin Faucher to Miami for Erick Lara and Andrew Lindsey
Lara is a small bonus 2023 international signing who had a good DSL debut. Lindsey is a 2023 5th round senior sign.
Brujan was a top 100 prospect for a while who has been awful in 272 major league PA's and Faucher was just DFA'ed. Brujan is out of options so he probably had to go one way or another. The Marlins are run by last week's Rays GM.

As good a place as any: Willie Hernandez has passed away.
His 1984 season was outrageous. 80 games. 140.3 innings, which would be like a starter these days. 1.92 ERA. Hard to imagine anymore.

That's sad news. RIP. 1984 was all about the Tigers who began the season 35-5 and coasted thru the rest of the season, swept the 84 win AL West champ KC and blew through SD in 5 games after the Padres comeback against the Cubs. Willie Hernandez was at the center of it. He had been mainly a lefty reliever who had had a career year in the closing role in '84 as a veteran player.

MVP and Cy Young as a reliever is wild There was a 20 year stretch where relievers were winning the Cy Young a lot (and the MVP occasionally). It's a trip looking back at the old awards voting. Ripken was very clearly the best player in the AL that year but finished 27th (!!!!!!) in the voting because the Orioles underachieved and won only 85 games. Award-voting hindsight aside, it was an incredible season by Hernandez.

Mariners trade Eugenio Suarez to DBacks for Carlos Vargas and Seby Zavala
Suarez is on 1/13 with a 1/13 club option.
Vargas is a reliever breaking into the majors with a 100 MPH fastball and horrendous results in AAA. Outside of the top 30 in their rankings. Zavala is just some random backup catcher. Don't really get this one for Seattle?

If Seattle thinks he's more of an average hitter than a 130 wRC+ guy and that his defense is bad (in line with UZR and DRS rather than OAA) then Suarez is an average or slightly below 32 year old (which is what Steamer thinks), so not a ton of surplus there, though still maybe a little bit. Still based on his WAR the last few years I'm surprised they couldn't do a little better than this.

Rosenthal saying Urias may start at third for them.... oooookkaaaayyyyy lol Is that crazy? Pretty sure Seattle is a really model driven team and the models are gonna think Urias is about the same performance wise as Suarez at $8M less

Suarez isn't anything spectacular but was a 3 fWAR guy last year. Feels like the dbacks got the better end of it but Suarez is definitely regressing so I get it.
Hopefully the trade market starts warming up even more.

Pretty sure Seattle is a really model driven team and the models are gonna think Urias is about the same performance wise as Suarez at $8M less I think that’s pretty crazy, yeah. It puts a ton of undue (imo) pressure on his bat. I’d be pretty surprised if he offered a functional improvement over Suarez (and even then, the bar should probably be a little higher).
