A trade has to be coming if they’re signing another bullpen arm like this

It’s such a small commitment that if he sucks they don’t have to carry him but not sure what they’re seeing here to warrant a big league deal
High 80’s FB, low-mid 80s cut, high 70s slider, change up. Cutter + slider is probably the best pitch. All of the off speed stuff is actually solid but when you’re topping out at 90 it’s tough to have success as a RHP. Maybe he gets good extension due to his size. I could see how the arm angle is annoying for RHH

Not sure why they'd want Criswell. Tampa couldnt make him effective and it's not like his minor league numbers are overly impressive. Not understanding this one.

How much of his salary is deferred? $1,000 AAV over 1,000 years

Worth noting that he still has an option left.

I love a good reason to use the “Get The Duckboats Ready” line.

Is he more worthy of 40-man spot than Drohan or Fernandez?
I understand the roles are different, but the upside here seems much more limited for a team in the middle of a rebuild.

Please stop with the "duckboats" comments and other meta comments about each signing and free agency as a whole. There's a way to discuss or disagree with the move without those types of comments. Thanks.

Red Sox could use more triple-A pitching depth.
Only confusing part here is: why didn't the Rays trade him for a PTBNL or cash? Both teams would have been better off.

Below-average fastball velocity, plus control, following the Breslovian philosophy. Maybe they can improve his stuff or usage.

Worth noting that he still has an option left. Yeah looks like they're just spending a million bucks to get a guy they like on to the 40 instead of filling that spot on waivers, and Criswell will be the WooSox opening day starter
4.33 xFIP in AAA, 4.54 in the majors basically as a starter is not too shabby. 101 Stuff+

He throws strikes. Big plus. Another data point in favor of Breslow wanting guys that have great control. He's on Youtube saying that control is the one thing he has no ability to improve in a pitcher.

If this is 39 of 40 one has to think that a trade is inanimate

The first head scratcher of the Breslow era. baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/cooper-criswell-681867?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlbLooks like he manages contact very well, but that hasn't translated to good results. He induces grounders at a decent rate 44% and 1.5GB/FB. But he has no bat missing ability at all. His sinker and changeup get hulk smashed xBA .351 xSLG .571 xBA .312 xSLG .509 While his sweeper is fantastic, his cutter is "ok" xBA .166 xSLG .254 xBA .293 xSLG .453 Maybe pitch tracking/shape likes him? Us mere mortals will never know. Maybe they will altere his pitchmix or stop him throwing changeups? It's kind of bold to sign a reliever the Rays couldn't make use of and give him a 40 man spot.

The first head scratcher of the Breslow era. We had a guy that threw 88-89 and threw a lot of strikes. And he was the greatest closer for one season I've ever seen in Boston. Maybe the plan is to bring Koji back to teach this guy the disappearing split.

Thanks. It was meant as an (admittedly unfunny) dig at those who react that way to every minor transaction, but point taken and mea culpa.
