OK, way too early for this but the free agency thread was getting me down and I want to talk prospects, which is what we're all about. Right?
Who are three players in the system who will:
1. Make the greatest jump in Sox Prospects rankings in 2024?
2. Make the highest jump amoung Red Sox prospects in Pipeline rankings in 2024?
3. The one guy you are super excited to watch grow in 2024, rankings be damned.
I'll go first.
1. Last year on April 5, Wilyer Abreu was the 24th ranked prospect on this site. By the end of the year update he had moved all the way to 8. That, friends is helium. I'm going to go a little bit out on a limb here, but my Sox Prospects Helium Pick for 2024 is Jedixson Paez. He will turn 20 next week and is projected to start the year in Greenville, where he will be the youngest guy in the projected rotation. This step will be significant for the Red Sox 2021 Latin Program Pitcher of the Year, and this hope is pinned on him adding a little extra muscle to his frame and mustard to his fastball through his offseason program. What stands out to me in his numbers is this: 7.79 k/9; 1.28 bb/9. Those strikeouts don't blow you away, but the low walk total tells me the kid knows how to use his stuff. With a couple extra clicks on his fastball and a frame to go deeper into games; I think the Red Sox could have something here. Currently checking in at 39 on the site, I don't think I would be crazy with physical maturation to see him jump into the low 20s by the end of the year, perhaps even jumping 16 spots as his countryman Wilyer did in '23
2. The 2024 rankings aren't out yet, and Mayo has just this week started sharing some insights from the MLB pipeline poll. At the end of last year the Red Sox checked in with Mayer at 11, Roman at 35, Ceddanne at 72 and Teel at 82. One interesting note is that in this year's poll, Ceddane Rafaela placed 2nd to PCA for top defensive prospect in all of baseball. You know who else got a vote? Marcelo Mayer - who is healthy. Muhahahahaha. But my guy to rise unlike any other this year in the Pipeline rankings is Kyle Teel. With that release time, his defense is going to become legend; and with a full season in Portland, where he should continue to rake, there should be no question he is a very, very good prospect. The one thing that may hold him back is the existence of Ethan Salas, who I'm thinking will probably check in in the Top 3 to start this year. I think Teel will likely be a top 50 when the first list drops. There were like 10 SS in the TOP 25 last year, so why not have 2 catchers in the top 25 at the end of 2024?
3. Kristian Campbell. 6-3, from Chattanooga. Yellowjacket like Nomar and Tek. This is 100% gut. But I think Chaim got a real good one here, and 2024 will be fun to watch him help Greenville defend their title.
