really? You can’t imagine wanting to watch a show that gives you unprecedented access to the lives of professional baseball players? Some of us like the sport, not so much the reality TV show attached to it.

I like it. Sure Casas feels like the natural choice to be a breakout star, but I look forward to seeing the personalities of guys I don’t know. Maybe some dark horse will be a new favorite. Can we get betting odds on this? I'll take Refsnyder.
Now I really wish they had brought Joe Kelly back...

I really don’t get the sentiment that this won’t be an interesting team to follow. There are tons of positional battles, there are a ton of guys who seem like they’ll have high highs and low lows, there’s a brand new GM trying to fix a major longstanding problem in the organization. This is a huge brand with a volatile roster that could win 95 games as easily as it could lose 95. Guys like Casas, Grissom, and Pivetta seem like they’d be very interesting personalities to follow. You’ve got the Story comeback to watch. Plenty of storylines. I feel like this is exactly the sort of team you’d want to kick something like this off with. This is about the ups and downs of an MLB season, a team with a lot of talent and even more question marks seems like a much more interesting subject than one that totally sucks or one that’s probably gonna win 100 games. As a Sox fan, I follow this logic perfectly. There is a lot for the hardcore fans that post here to dig into. But that isn’t the market that Netflix is trying to capture. Does the casual baseball fan even know who Vaughn Grissom is? Or what team Nick Pivetta is on? My assertion is that a team like the Dodgers would have widespread appeal for a program like this. Ohtani is the biggest star in the game. Yamamoto is coming from Japan for his first camp. You’d be able to attract an Asian audience to follow those stories. Mookie Betts has a lot of marketing appeal. Freddie Freeman is a slam-dunk HOFer and a massive personality. Meanwhile, the Sox sort of have nothing to offer. Casas?? Maybe?? P.S. I will definitely be watching.

This may not be a team of AllStars (though it might) but the Sox have very interesting players with stories to cover; and worthy of coverage. Kids like Bello, Rafaella, Teel. Characters like Casas, Devers, Pivetta, Giolito. Fighting back from injuries like Houck, Grissom, O’Neill, Story. 3 Asian countries represented by Masa, Ref and Wong. Hot prospects like the big 5. This is good content.
I don’t imagine this will be limited to the players. Hopefully not. Great story about the new pitching system and the gurus implementing it for example. Probably lots of retro looks at ‘03, ‘04, ‘07, ‘13, ‘18, ‘21 as well as historic stuff from Ruth, “the curse”, Tommy John, Williams, the “other DiMaggio”, Yaz, Gold Dust, Pedey, Papi, even Remy. I Look forward to coverage of historic Fenway, greater Boston and New England and their fans. Clam Chowdah! Tea Party. Boston Latin. Marathon. The real Sons of Liberty. Only a few teams and MLB cities have such a rich history. Netflix writers and producers have, literally, a golden opportunity to create a classic.

I will definitely be watching. The demographic Netflix is after doesn’t care about Mookie Betts any more than they care about Tristan Casas - or Nick Pivetta for that matter. The producers of these things are after human drama, and there’s much more likely to be human drama in Boston this year (where the fanbase and media are ready to burn Fenway to the ground) than in LA where the Dodgers will sleepwalk their way to the playoffs. If the documentary is just about winning a playoff series, it’s not going to do anything for people who don’t care that much about sports.

I'm not sure all of those are Asian countries...
On another note: the silver lining of their inevitably being two games back of the wild card at the trade deadline is that it should make for some good tv drama.

First thought: Oh great - a distraction.
Second thought: Maybe this team will respond to the attention and play better than they have a right to do.
Third thought: Hey, how about some starting pitching to go with that Netflix series, John and Tom?

LOLOL. You know what I mean. Actually Ref was born in Seoul and adopted to Laguna Hills. And don’t forget the Mayor. As an Irish American I represent dear old Erin proudly. My Asian wife proudly represents her heritage. Our starting catcher likely feels the same about his background. We are a nation of immigrants after all. And agree that a fight for a wild card spot is a good storyline. And as both travel and food are hot TV venues right now, and baseball teams travel constantly and eat locally, usually pretty well. So how about, for example, a taste test for FLA raised Sox players in ST to compare regional foods: Ft Meyers’ shrimper fleet is historic. New England is the place for Lobsters. Or Sanibel mussels vs Cape Cod clams. Or Snook vs Bluefish. A brief segment on this with promising Sox rookies at Fenway South and then again in Portland might be fun for the foodies among us. I hope the writers and editors plan to take advantage of all this potential.

Well I’m sure I’ll give it a try when it comes out but there’s a reason NFL teams try and avoid hard knocks like the plague.

Well I’m sure I’ll give it a try when it comes out but there’s a reason NFL teams try and avoid hard knocks like the plague. Well, NFL opponents scout hardknocks to see if they can get extra video to prepare for plays. Hard knocks airs while those plays are still relevant. This docuseries will air in 2025 and baseball doesn’t have the same concern over giving away secret gameplan information.

I'm surprised to be saying this but I think this is a smart move. Clearly they have been looking for ways to "grow the brand" and re-engage public attention, and between the 2024 and 04 documentaries, this should be a good step. I'll also add that Netflix sports documentaries have generally been high quality - my biggest complaint has been that they might be a little favorable to the "host" team or player, which sounds just fine here. Red Sox have a chance become more publicly relevant (which should help with attracting players, not just revenue) and look good in the process. If they don't screw it up...
Or maybe I'm just looking to justify my interest in watching it. Either way, I'm intrigued.

The F.O. really needs to sign a couple of free agents if this is going down because this team looks destined to struggle as currently assembled. Fans already booing before truck day knowing there hasn’t been much done to improve the level of talent, no sense advertising that ineptitude to everyone with a Netflix account. But hey, maybe that’s why they’ve been holding back announcing the signings….

Netflix Executive: “The production for Stranger Things is taking longer than we thought. Does anyone have any ideas for a horror series in the meantime?”

Well, it's a great marketing ploy. They get eyeballs on the team they would otherwise not get. NESN ratings are way down, the seats have been empty by August when the visitors' fans aren't adding numbers to the attendance, and the Red Sox are hardly discussed in the sports media in town, so it's a great chance to regenerate interest without having a team that would otherwise be considered compelling. Why do I have a feeling the 2004 Red Sox netflix documentary will have a very different tenor than the 2024 Red Sox netflix subject?
