Will be interesting to see how this turns out. I've mostly enjoyed other Netflix sports docs (Drive to Survive tricked me into following F1 for a full year until I remembered I don't like auto racing), but could be a different experience to watch a team I actually care about.

Well this is one way to get people invested in the team. If the on the field product might be substandard, maybe you can get people invested in some spring training drama. Can't hurt.

More:
Ever see a documentary about a last-place team, absentee ownership and pissed off fan base?
Either they're planning something grand so it's the greatest story ever, or this is setting the stage for a real-life reenactment of that scene where the Joker burns all the mobsters' cash.

Netflix’s next great true-crime documentary.

Knowing that this has been in the works for a looong time, per the McAdams report, I wonder if/how this impacted some free agency discussions - there are some guys who just don't want to be part of something like this.
Also, the organization won't have final-cut rights, so the warts-and-all approach could be a big negative to some.

Sounds fun! I bet it makes Casas a star.

It's somewhat surprising to me they wouldn't invest more aggresively in the roster given this info. I actually take that as a good sign that ownership isn't overly meddling with what BBops wants to do.

Why would Netflix want to start this foray into MLB by focusing on the 14th best team in the league? They should have started with the Dodgers(or Yankees) to get some real eyeballs. It feels like a lost opportunity here.

another example of having completely lost focus With the NFL and Hard Knocks the teams don't get to decide whether they are the team for that season outside of a select few based off some stipulations, I think maybe if they win the super bowl or something. We don't really know if the MLB went to the Sox and said we're doing this and you're our first team. So I don't know anything about losing focus. Overall this is just a big nothing to me, even if the Sox did say we want to do it and volunteered I couldn't care less. This won't make or break their season one way or another.

It feels like a lost opportunity here. You're acting like they chose the Miami Marlins or something, this is still the Boston Red Sox one of the top 5 most well known baseball teams there is. This will get plenty of extra views being the Bosox.

But outside of Devers can the casual baseball fan even name a single player on this team? And I’m not even sure I’ve ever heard Decers speak before. Who are the compelling characters on this team? Meanwhile, focusing on the Dodgers/Ohtani seems like it would have been a monster hit with crossover appeal. Oh well. Netflix seems to be doing just fine without my help anyway.

Boston media is a pressure cooker and they can tap into that too. If the team winds up going young this year, you get the ups and downs of rookies. If they overachieve, that's something too. Plus, a lot of people hate Boston and will turn out to revel in the franchise's downfall.

You know what bores an audience? A smiling, successful team with grinning owners and cocksure executives. You're banking on them underachieving and that's not a sure thing.

I really don’t get the sentiment that this won’t be an interesting team to follow. There are tons of positional battles, there are a ton of guys who seem like they’ll have high highs and low lows, there’s a brand new GM trying to fix a major longstanding problem in the organization. This is a huge brand with a volatile roster that could win 95 games as easily as it could lose 95. Guys like Casas, Grissom, and Pivetta seem like they’d be very interesting personalities to follow. You’ve got the Story comeback to watch. Plenty of storylines.
I feel like this is exactly the sort of team you’d want to kick something like this off with. This is about the ups and downs of an MLB season, a team with a lot of talent and even more question marks seems like a much more interesting subject than one that totally sucks or one that’s probably gonna win 100 games.

For what it’s worth, the reporting is that the Red Sox volunteered to be the first team for this, but Cora and the players have all been involved in these final decisions. Apparently Pivetta, Story, and Refsnyder have played a key role in getting the players to buy in.

Really doesn't seem like an environment that is conducive with helping young players break into the majors....."Hey Rafaela, you just struck-out three times today. Tell the Netflix viewers what happened" How much of a factor was this for any potential FA signings?....Candidates deciding that they would take similar money from another team and not have a camera in their face 24/7

Hate to say it but the fact they'll be on Netflix is probably more interesting than the games they play in 2024 barring any big surprises.
I'm not sure what's so compelling about a 70 something win team, but I guess we'll find out.
Maybe the biggest drama will be the will they get along or wont they dynamic of Cora and Breslow and will Cora even want to stick around if they do well and there are greener pastures out there for him, emphasis on the word green as a free agent manager to be.
Cant imagine Henry will be around for this. Maybe we get some Theo pep talks to Breslow.
Cant imagine wanting to watch this unless you're a Red Sox fan or you flat out hate them and enjoy their mediocrity.

Didn't everyone sign in LA? I'm sure it made zero difference.

It's the Boston Red Sox - the camera is in your face 24/7 regardless. And this is likely to be a much friendlier camera on a day to day basis than the Boston media.

I like it. Sure Casas feels like the natural choice to be a breakout star, but I look forward to seeing the personalities of guys I don’t know. Maybe some dark horse will be a new favorite.
