Declined Sox's invitation to Opening Day, honoring the 2004 World Series winners and Tim Wakefield.
What a turd. I didn't even like him in 2004.

Declined Sox's invitation to Opening Day, honoring the 2004 World Series winners and Tim Wakefield. What a turd. I didn't even like him in 2004. Like Schilling or not, the Red Sox do not win the WS in 2004 without him! How does not having Schilling change the success and club house over the next 20 years. Would the Red Sox be in the same boat (or lack of duck boat) as the No WS Mariners, Padres, Rays, Rockies, and Brewers. The 2004 WS team changed the culture, mood, confidence of the team, fans, city from 86 years losers to that of the most successful franchise this century. In 2004 I had already been a Red Sox die hard for 33 years, and was skeptical of seeing a WS win (especially after the failures of 1975 and 1986 leads in game 7 of each). What happens on the field is what I care about. I do not care what any of you have to say about personality, politics, or anything else. The moderators can and should ban, erase, modify all that is not baseball related, and I congratulate them for it. I also hope they lock this thread or just delete it. IMO

IMO If they're celebrating the 2004 WS team, invite him. If they're celebrating Tim Wakefield by inviting the 2004 WS team, ask Wakefield's family/teammates how they feel about it.

Without going too much into the rabbit hole, this was probably best decision Curt Schilling has made... in a while.
Speaking out about Wakefield before he died seemed deliberate, even to the Varitek family. So he would have taken away from the event with a harsh amount of boos being handed to him for that. This team has enough things to boo at as it is.
So for him to stay away was a great decision. Maybe he can comeback one last time in the distant future, and all will be forgiven, but it's too soon for it right now. Fresh on people's minds what he did.

There are places where you can read about what Curt Schilling is like. No reason for this site to be one of them.

It doesn't matter what we think of Schilling, in light of recent controversies, staying away was the right thing to do.

He's actually not tone deaf for the first time in a long time. Appreciate it. And he did it by shutting up and going away.

What really happened really sucks for both Schilling and the Wakefields:
1. Mirabelli shared the news with Schilling 2. Schilling announced it publicly 3. The issue wasn’t that it was public, the issue was that Wakefield’s own kids didn’t know about the brain cancer (that’s why Varitek’s wife was so irate) 4. Schilling felt like absolute shit about it, if you didn’t notice, his Twitter went dormant and he also took a leave from Outkick 5. Schilling is trying to stay out of the spotlight for the next year in large part because he cares deeply about Tim Wakefield
This is one of the only stories I have an actual scoop on, and hearing the detail about how it affected both Schilling and the Wakefields personally was super upsetting. Schilling is definitely making the right call staying out of the spotlight

That’s a really unique opinion from a Sox fan. Like, you were the only one. He started 32 games, won 21 of them and fished 2nd for a Cy Young Award. Oh, and the team won a historic world championship. I get it that he screwed up his legacy but he couldn’t buy a beer at any bar in all of New England. Not starting a thing with you. I’ve just never heard that.

Going to go ahead and close this thread. Not really much new to discuss with regards to Schilling.
