Just watched the end of the NY - Oakland game. A lunchtime treat! The Athletics are by no means a dead letter. Mason Miller, for one, is just about the most fearsome reliever I've watched this year. After they went ahead on a 2-run HR in the 9th, he wasted no time K-ing the side: Volpe, Soto, and Judge went down swinging. I loved the graphic they posted (and discussed, briefly) when Sosa was up: .368 BA against 100+ MPH pitches. Three swings & misses later that topic was no longer interesting.

Leaving aside the great comedy and my enjoyment this could happen to Boone and the Yankees, yet another reason to have ball/strike robo calls or reviews (I really like the way tennis does it). Broadly agree, but doing reviews stinks. I can't stand the idea of adding a special little mini-game to baseball where the league knows what the right call is for every pitch, the umpire tells us his best guess at what the right call is, and if the manager can figure out when the umpire guesses wrong he gets a piece of candy. This is very dumb and I hate it. Either the robot is the ultimate authority calling balls and strikes or the umpire is. Weird little hybrid shenanigans is a worst-case scenario.

On that final high strike to Soto, one of the best hitters in the game looked completely over-matched. Won't see that very often.

Btw, aren't the A's one of those bad teams we beat in the now discredited 7-3 opening road trip -- what on earth are they doing shutting out the Yankees in Yankee Stadium?

It's idiotic. Just use automated balls and strikes even if it's a blunt instrument. All that is needed is consistency.

Do managers get an automatic fine for being ejected? That's pretty inexcusable.

But somewhere, this should in fact be a game. Also, why do I like it so much in Tennis, is it just the oval mark made on the screen?

Seeing Erick Fedde come back and pitch well is cool. That is all.

Crashing into a wall feels way more reasonable than while swinging a bat though

Big day for injuries to Scott Boras clients who were off to slow starts and settled for short-term contracts with opt outs after one year with the hope of cashing in at that point despite the fact that they were already coming off of very strong years and injury risk is precisely the reason, or one of the reasons, that one wouldn't, in general, want to take a short-term deal coming off a strong year.

Rizzo not off to the best start and DJ Lemahieu I guess had a setback on his injury rehab?

Cy Young finalist at age 24 (2022) and then in one off-season he’s barely an MLB pitcher - make it make sense

The umpires blatantly miscalled Jo Adell out at second base *after a review* to give the Orioles a win. More embarrassment for the worst run league in sports.

With a loss to the Cubs tonight, the Astros are now 11 games under .500 at 7-18. They are 0-7 in 1 run games.

Mike Trout is having an interesting season to say the least. 10 HRs but only 13 RBI which doesn't seem possible and yet.. A 158 wRC+ but is only batting .237 with a .321 OBP but a .598 Slg. Someone needs to get him outta LAA, his contract probably will continue to age poorly but part of me doesn't hate the idea of Trout DH'ing for the Sox.
