Picking up cast-offs that can't make the Pirates is not something we are used to seeing. I just hope he doesn't get a spot over Weissert This feels like Tim Wakefield slander. I’m sure it’s not, but let’s give dude a chance. Tim Wakefield wasn't the only Pirates discard in their 2004 rotation. Bronson Arroyo was as well. That said I'm willing to take the leap that Chase Anderson will be closer to Jimmy Anderson, who was another Pirates discard on the 04 team than he will be to Wakefield or Arroyo.

Maybe the new pitching philosophy is seeing something fixable in him.

Anderson will be 35 this year. Wakefield and Arroyo were in the 20's and in their prime when they were picked off the Pirates. Anderson is the opposite of that. Anderson will provide some of the lost innings, but hopefully doesn't see all that many high leverage innings.

Maybe the new pitching philosophy is seeing something fixable in him. ^This, plus the guy has had a pretty decent spring -- 11 ip 5 h 3 er 3 bb 9 k 1 hr Obviously, spring stats don't mean much but at least he hasn't been cuffed around... On the subject of seeing something fixable, I haven't heard anything about their plans for Anderson but I wonder if they will take a page out of the LAD/Ryan Brasier playbook. "We just signed you to a guaranteed MLB contract, now go to Ft. Myers for three weeks and learn how to throw a cutter" (or a knuckle curve or whatever pitch the Breslow-Bailey Pitching Academy thinks will turn his career around). Seems to make more sense than fitting him into the current logjam in the bullpen...
