He had an opt out with Tampa if he wasn't in the majors, he exercised that, and then was traded before he was granted free agency and then we didn't add him either? I don't understand how this one went down My recollection when he signed was it was a two-way deal. Ah, here it is: www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/01/details-on-naoyuki-uwasawas-rays-contract.htmlI remember wondering at the time if he was intrigued by how frequently Rays pitchers hurt their pitching arms. As long as he doesn't get anywhere near Fenway until he proves his worth in Worcester, I'm fine with it. Perhaps TB recognized that they have to churn through so many guys in a season that it would be hard to leave Uwasawa down long enough to fully adapt to the US game. Also from the MLBTR piece, I miss the days when Uwasawa's Japanese team was routinely referred to as the "Ham Fighters."

Still looking for someone to report if we have control beyond this year Can’t say for sure but I don’t think it comes with control beyond what he signed with Tampa. I don’t think you get any extra control on 30 YO minor league free agents (or major league for that matter) beyond the contract you sign them to, no? I think he only got a 1 year deal. I’d happily admit I’m wrong but I just don’t see how he’d have control beyond this year

If the Sox acquired him in a trade, as is being reported, they would be acquiring the terms of Uwasawa's deal with TB, which appears to be one year, split contract. It appears that TB simply decided that he wasn't in their plans and decided to get some cash for him (likely something close the amount of his posting fee) before he could simply opt out.
But can he still opt out? I wonder if the Sox reached out to him to ask if he would be inclined to do so (while informing him that they have hired a bunch of former Driveline guys) before they zelled TB.

Wait, why did we add him to the 40? Was he already on the Rays 40? They just signed him to a minor league deal though, I don't get why he would've been added at any point

Wait, why did we add him to the 40? Was he already on the Rays 40? They just signed him to a minor league deal though, I don't get why he would've been added at any point Because he had an upward mobility clause (similar to an opt out, except for the 40-man roster rather than 26-man). The Rays only had him on a minor league deal so that they had spring training to figure out the 40-man situation.

I thought he had to be added to the 26 or he could elect for FA

I can’t find it now but I did read somewhere that he will be a free agent after this season.
