I take it as a good sign that people are turning on Rafaela (and arguing that a 23-year-old elite defender on an 8/50 contract has no trade value ?!?!?). Means he's probably about to go on a scorcher.

I wouldn't say no trade value, but given that this money is guaranteed, any team would have to be reasonably confident in his bat improving enough to let his glove carry him. Certainly the Red Sox are, or they wouldn't have extended him, and I'm not worried yet, but I do think the contract makes him hard to trade until the bat wakes up. Like, normally if a prospect busts you're just out whatever you traded to get him, but now you're out that plus $50 million. Of course the flip side is that if he starts hitting, he could quickly become more valuable with the extension in place than he would have otherwise.

Rookie. 23. AllStar potential. Elite CF. Already best likely to save the SS position for 2024. Which allows an OF of Abreu, Duran, O’Neill, Refsnyder. Elite speed. Some power emerging. Still learning how to hit. Let’s trade him.
