He doesn’t chase: The Meidroth Thread

Without having access to EV, swing speed, or defense information, I have to say Meidroth looks to me like the most impressive Sox minor leaguer year to date. Running a 137 wRC+ on a 24% BB rate and 10% K Rate. Can't wait to see him in MLB later this year.

I‘m interested in whether he could handle spot duty in center field for late game shenanigans or covering during injury issues. I think the Brockstar was infield only when he first got to the show. Meidroth is a handy player even if he remains infield only, however.

He’s only played 2B, 3B and SS before. I also learned he’s played more shortstop (which is not much) in our shortstop-stocked system than he did in college, although he did have some summer ball experience there as well.

I think he could use some more AAA time. I’ve only seen a couple of his at bats this year, but I’ve gotta wonder what happens to him in the show without ABS and against a lot more velocity. I would prefer one of the AAAA types right now.

I get it, but another line of thinking might be that the reason they are "AAAA types" is that they aren't good enough to handle MLB pitching for any period of time. Maybe Meidroth, despite his limited experience in the upper levels, has the talent and approach to be successful against MLB pitching. I am doubtful he will be part of the 1B solution, just trying to think outside the box.

Kavadas is admittedly an interesting case because they have to make a decision on him this year anyway, right? He's Rule 5 eligible this Winter. He's done nothing but fall in the org rankings the last couple years, to the point where he seems unranked now (unless I'm missing his place in the rankings; sanity check me, please). Cora already commented that they're looking short-term at Reyes-Dalbec-Refsnyder at first, which either means that they play until soon-to-be-announced Cron/Belt/Votto is ready (if Casas is really out for most of the year), or it might mean that it's too early to disrupt minor league performance paths but in a month we'll know what the next 1B plan is, and that might be Kavadas (they're also playing Hickey at first, right?). 

I guess my feeling is, we have a lot of replacement-level players in the big leagues right now getting meaningful ABs in our infield, and we kind of know we're likely in for more of the same if we swap Hamilton for (say) Eddy Alvarez or Jamie Westbrook. We *might* have something more than that if we go with Meidroth or Sogard. In the case of Sogard, his time is now; he's 26 and will turn 27 in the Fall. In the case of Meidroth, OK, concerns abut rushing him or burning option years are justified. I get it. 

And maybe I'm letting the fan part of me override the armchair GM part. I'm completely OK watching the kids play, even if they take their lumps at the major league level. I'm less enthused about watching AAAA-types play if the kids are right there and have a decent shot at bringing more to the table than yet another replacement-level stat line. At a certain point, you have to actually do something with your farm system, right? 

One thing we know with relative certainty is that the offense is going to be LH heavy for the foreseeable future:

Meidroth is going to be a rich man’s Christian Arroyo, which will be even more valuable for a team with a lot of LHH.

Yeah at some point the numbers don’t lie. Curious if we are trending towards a lineup of meidroth at 2B and Grissom at LF

Probably correct but according to the site it appears they both have two options remaining so it's possible they could be kept around another year since they at the very least seem like viable AAAA players and perhaps still have some upside to become true MLBers even if just bench pieces. 

Pablo Reyes was DFA'd today which I only just found about because I googled him to check his FG page. True it is a fair amount of overlapping players even with Reyes DFAd now.
