No thread for who should be playing 1b? I have nothing much to add, but would like to hear what people think. I’ve seen scattered comments in various threads
Is Dalbec salvageable? Is C.J. Cron toast? Garrett Cooper? How would an acquisition affect their chances of going over there tax threshold? Romy Gonzalez when healthy? Pablo Reyes? Rob Refsnyder? Nico Kavadas? Wong now and then? Will Middlebrooks? (35 years old, still tall) Devers?

Cooper seems like a very obvious pick up, but my internal odds on them actually doing it are like 50/50
0% chance they go over the tax threshold this year.

I believe Cooper has until early next week to get claimed off waivers (or for the Sox to work out a trade with Breslow's old comrades in Chicago) before he's a free agent. Of the 1B options he is 1) healthy and ramped up for immediate game action (unlike like say, Joey Votto, CJ Cron or Brandon Belt), and 2) was playing competently in a small sample size.
Cooper if he were claimed on waivers would cost a pro-rated amount of his season salary of $1.5 mil. (The league minimum is $720,000). It seems like it would be silly to wait for him to clear waivers just to save pennies on the dollar for a decent 1B option when yours just fractured his rib, but that is a possibility...

Theyll probably bring back Cron but he'll need time to get back to spring training ready for the season mode. I'd prefer Belt or Cooper but I'm not sure how healthy Belt is. Either way I hope the Bobby Dalbec thing ends. He's a AAAA hitter at this point. Even mediocre would be a sizeable upgrade at this point to 0-for-the-season Bobby.

I've been dismissive of Kavadas, but on the last pod Chris Clegg and Ian floated the idea of a Dalbec/Kavadas platoon as a generally unattractive option that might still be best available internal solution. So, I guess, what is life if not a perennial series of experiments?

My biggest hope is that they do not wait months to do something about it. There are currently several black holes on offense, 2nd, ss, and 1b. Getting Grissom back might help at 2nd. I am willing to put up with Rafaela at short just because he at least fields the position competently. But it would help to have someone at 1st who was an average hitter. Belt would be ok if at his age and current condition he can play first on most days so we can limit Dalbec's appearances. Maybe Dalbec wouldn't be so bad if he only played against lefties? And maybe that is just wishful thinking. But do something. There has got to be someone out there who is better than playing Dalbec every day.

wOBA projections for the rest of the season; take them for what they're worth: ZiPS Casas: .363 Belt: .345
Cron: .335 Cooper: .317 Kavadas: .311 Dalbec .305 Steamer Casas: .356 Belt: .320
Cron: .306 Cooper: .308 Kavadas: .305 Dalbec: .294 Defensively, Dalbec has the best positional flexibility in being able to play 3B. Cooper is a good defensive first baseman; he's played the outfield before but not well, and that doesn't have much value for the Red Sox anyway. Belt, Cron, and Kavadas are 1B/DH only. Cron has negligible splits; Cooper's are slightly bigger but not huge; Belt and Dalbec would need a platoon partner.

This is the year to see what they have going forward. That`s why I`d like to see Kavadas get his shot.

I don’t see the problem with just giving Kavadas a shot at this point
I’ll take a .200 avg if he can manage a .350 obp and power will be serviceable at 1B

Jared Walsh is a free agent as of Wednesday but has not hit lately. LHH.

Cooper is the obvious fit because he also somewhat fits when Casas comes back hopefully in about two months. There were also reports of them being interested in him during the offseason. That paired with Breslow’s relationship with the cubs FO actually makes me surprised he’s not already here.

His OBP has been high at every level. And Bobby has a good record against lefties—so a platoon with Kavadas with Bobby as the defensive backup is certainly worth a look. Of course, we all want a like-for-like replacement for Casas but one is likely not available save for trading away a part of the future or increasing the budget.

Bobby has made some excellent plays at 1B the last few days but the bat still (as we’ve come to expect) has been just plain horrific. Even if the team really can’t quit Bob, it’s not like you can’t 1) keep him around as a backup corner infielder, which was his original role to start the year, or 2) send him back to Worcester as depth. I mean the way things are going for this team we will likely claim Garrett Cooper on waivers and then he will get struck by lightning

Cooper
Any team that wants him will have to pay the price in a trade. Unlikely that he's on waivers already.

Maybe if he cuts his hair and we tell him to do yoga before the game no one will notice?
