Ells is killing us and the way things are going we might not even get that draft pick for him. I still think one team will bite. The Rangers will have a low pick maybe they get a deal with him. Boras is gonna have to work his magic. I also wonder why today's game isn't a getwaway day game? They have to fly back after playing at 8 and all they get is one hour back from the time zone. I see little to no way we don't make the offer and they don't decline. Just think about some of the things that happened this last off season like the Soriano deal.

I can't possibly see the Sox not offering the 1 year qualifying offer to him. Even if he doesn't improve much this year it's still worth a shot next year. I also think that some team will be willing to give him big $ even off a down year. It ALWAYS happens, and usually guys who have had nowhere near a peak year like Ellsbury had get multi year $10M+ AAV deals

Terrific professional hitting by Ortiz gets them 2 huge runs because I don't think there's going to be more. Santiago looks tough.
Buchholtz survived a tough 1st: hope he settles in.

Wow Adam Dunn's White Sox career is saaaaad.
Always liked him as a ball player, Kenny Williams has to be kicking himself.

Can we talk about the steaming pile of awesome that is Jonny Gomes? They should DL Victorino just so Gomes can be benched.

Good outing for Buchholz on a night when the command wasn't really there.

Look how hard it was for Michael Bourn to get a contract this past offseason, and Bourn has been far more consistent player than Ellsbury. I were the Red Sox, and Ellsbury does not turn things around, I would not offer him the qualifying offer.

If he accepts, the Red Sox owe him like $15-16M for a one year deal, which he probably won't quite be worth but also won't be at a number that would kill them. If he declines, and doesn't sign somehwere until May, the Red Sox aren't worse off. I mean, a QO would probably tick Ellsbury off because it makes him a harder sign, but that's a problem with the CBA rather than a concern of the Red Sox.
Ellsbury's best season was much better than Bourn's, and Bourn eventually did sign. It only takes one team to convince itself of Ellsbury's upside to land the Red Sox a draft pick. The downside of offering him a QO is minimal.

Ellsbury had a good night last night, he still has plenty of time to turn the season around. He doesn't have to be 2011 Ellsbury, all he has to do is get the average up, get on base and hit 10 or so dingers and he'll have plenty of offers. They are already clammouring for him on NYC talk radio for the Mets.
