Vitek gets the start in LF tonite ... granting the wish of someone on here who wanted to see him transition into a utility player. Makes his first error in 2nd inning.

Pat Light was removed after one batter (a fly out).

Pat Light was removed after one batter (a fly out). Game started in a rain delay, and is delayed again in third. Possible he slipped on the mound. That's speculation though.

"Pat Light was removed after one batter (a fly out)"
Looks like iakovos11 was right... a perfect outing for Light.
Barnes 5 IP: 7H, 5K/1BB, 1 ER. A decent outing.
Salem is PPD. Greenville delayed. Quiet night for the prospects. Let's see what's going on with the big club...

Vasquez ends the day a single short of the cycle, although with two doubles.

Vasquez ends the day a single short of the cycle, although with two doubles. Really he was one base long of the cycle, not necessarily a bad thing.

The cycle is dumb, there I said it.

.357/.438/.619 for Vazquez in May. .412 OBP in 112 PAs in 2013. He's already moved up from 25 to 18th in the rankings, and I'm not sure he necessarily will jump much more this year, but he at least is looking like he can hit enough to get some serious run at MLB.
A few nice signs from scouting the box score...
3 of his 4 XBH came against RHPs (one 2B came against our old friend Tommy Hottovy). His splits are up to .277 vs. RHP/.345 vs. LHP (before tonight), a nice sign. None of the four pitchers for NH tonight is a prospect, however/.

He ended with the 3B FYI. I've always wanted to see what a guy would do if he was a 1B short of the cycle and had a chance for extra bases.
The cycle is dumb, but so is the Triple Crown, and RBI and etc etc. They are still nice accomplishments, and very strong predictors of success.

The cycle is way, way, waaaaaay dumber than the triple crown. You have to be an amazing hitter to win a triple crown. The hitting for the cycle is basically a total fluke.

Drove me nuts when I woke up this morning and everyone was losing their minds over Trout hitting for the cycle.

Just to show how meaningless those splits can be at this point in the season, though, he was hitting just .242 against RHP entering the night.

Vazquez moved through the system relatively quickly. He won't even be 23 till mid-August. Given a stable home, he seems to be making himself comfortable.
As fine as the .412 OBP and the extra base hits are, the best part is the K rate: with 18 BBs and 14 strikeouts, he's in rarefied air only a handful of prospects visit.
He may not stay there the whole season, but so far so good.

It's nice to see. At the risk of hearing some scary prospect flame-out stories, not many prospects at 22 in AA have his stat line for two months, and then completely flame out.
Still need a way to stratify by quality of pitcher. For CV as well as Almanzar.
Next two days are against a good pitcher in Nolin (#4-8 in TOR org) and the #13-15 Mets prospect (Mazzoni). I'll be keeping an eye out for some nice ABs by Vazquez/Almanzar. And of course Xander.

What hits really count? It seems that they don't count unless the pitcher is a prospect. They don't count if the pitching prospect has a bad outing. They don't count unless the ball is hit hard. They don't count if an outstanding fielder might have made a play on the ball. Any other rules regarding a hit not really being a hit?

If Dustin Pedroia hits it, it's not a hit.

"What hits really count? It seems that they don't count unless the pitcher is a prospect. "
Where did I say they don't count? There's no need to be obtuse or rude.
Many prospects can hit well at AA/AAA and stall out at the majors, in large part because the depth of quality pitchers just isn't there. There's 150 SPs in AA, what is the MLB SP turnover? 20% of that? You can hit .275 at AA without having much success against any future MLB starters.
So yes, I'm not as impressed when a prospect goes 4-4 against an 89 MPH straight fastball and a curveball with no break, as I am against pitchers with MLB quality stuff. It's a great night for CV, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do Thurs/Fri. Nowhere did I discount Vazquez's success, but I do think it's important.
I suppose you think Tim Federowicz is going to be an All-Star catcher because he had a .936 OPS at AAA?

Counting on extrapolation of A/AA stats is how GMs get fired and Lars Anderson becomes untouchable.

For some of the Stat heads around here the only hits that really count are the ones that come when a pitcher throws four balls.
