Unless I'm forgetting something, Ciriaco was the last IF/OF left on the bench and Ortiz had already pinch hit for Iglesias. If Ciriaco pinch runs for Gomes, he's staying in at 3B and one of Ortiz, Napoli, Salty or Ross is playing LF in the bottom of the inning. Bradley led off hitting for the pitcher, he would have gone to left. I don't think either guy would have scored on the play. And Nava swinging at the first pitch is a guy that knows the strikezone looking for the first fastball he can hit. Just baseball for me. But I like to manage as much as the next fan.

You must have been reading my mind as I watched the end of the game. Nava's no fool. Papelbon is going to throw strikes. Try your luck with the first pitch on the off-chance he'll get you something down the middle you can handle. As good a strategy as any, I'd say. No cigar on this one, though they had lots of opportunities. Just more of that good old statistical variation kicking in.

Morales doing his best Lackey impression to start today's game. Almost HR, HR, base hit

Pitching wise, as quirky as he is, is Aceves a better option than Morales, or is it fair to judge Morales on his first start? Perhaps when healthy Morales is more suitable for the pen.

I like that play by Iglesias even though he was out. He had a good shot and ran hard from the start. Good hustle.

I really want this split. Gomes makes this a bit more comfortable.
Easy steal by Ellsbury after being hit. Score him would be even better.

Also congrats to Ellsbury on achieving Red Sox single game steals record.

The throwing error was just to make sure he didn't steal third.

Hey look, NYMFY got swept by Los Mets.
Meanwhile, does anyone know if Kendrys Morales can still play first? I seemed to recall he was average before the injury and he looks pretty well recovered now. I'm already thinking of him as a replacement for Napoli next year on a three year deal, pending a physical of course. He can transition to part time DH if/wheN Papi ever retires.

I know writer's usually don't make up the headline to their articles. Could this title be any more inaccurate if you tried? Jacoby Ellsbury's 5 thefts carry Sox to victory. bostonherald.com/comments/1062853086
