could this preclude a promotion of Workman or Ranaudo? Probably not because Godfrey was in and out of the rotation, but there at least is the roster slot now at AAA

Yeah, Pawtucket was at 26 if you counted Aceves. Wasn't much of a need for him with six starters and a full bullpen. Don't read too much into it.

FAIR TO SAY the Sox are doing a favor for Godfrey and Pirates. A starting pitcher with MLB experience and an option remaining ... has some value to Pirates.
Could have easily put Godfrey in the pen and released somebody else to open up a bullpen spot. Somebody like Kehrt in Portland. Godfrey deserves better that bullpen, I guess.
Sox like to do favors for Pirates, a la Michael McKenry. Go figure.
