Richly deserved. At Workman's age, I would like him to be challenged. We seem to have a lot of #3 rotation starters coming up. Wonder who will be in the rotation of all of these guys. I personally like Webster. I could see a Workman eventually being a solid #5 for us.

Nice to see him get pushed when he deserves it. Pawtucket becomes an even more interesting player!

I know a lot of guy think Workman still ends up in the pen. I saw him pitch a few times live for Texas and contended from the start he'd be a #3 starter. Still need to sharpen the secondary offerings for that to bear out, but I'm sticking to it until he gets assigned to the pen.
He also looks like nice trade bait - not saying he'd be a guy on his own to get you an elite player or all star, but he could be a 2nd or 3rd guy in a 4-6 player package for one.

Given who's eligible for the rule 5 draft, I see Workman, Almanzar and maybe Brentz getting moved by the deadline.

From some shmuck named Chris Hatfield on Twitter....probably not a reliable source OK, because "most likely Keith Couch returns to starting" is quite different than what you said. I'm speculating, not reporting it as fact.

Given who's eligible for the rule 5 draft, I see Workman, Almanzar and maybe Brentz getting moved by the deadline. Interesting thought. I wouldn't be surprised if you're right, but this isn't really the same roster construction as 2011, when the Sox moved a bunch of fringy Rule 5 eligibles (Fife, Federowicz, Chiang). The Red Sox have a lot fewer players under contract for 2014 than they did for 2012, and there are also more guys on the current 40-man that they'd DFA. It wouldn't surprise me to see Brentz and Workman added to the 40-man and De La Torre or Wright or Hassan or Ciriaco or Holt designated. Almanzar seems the most likely. He's having by far his best pro season, likely gets taken in the Rule 5 due to his talent, probably isn't a great bet to help the 2014 team (unlike Brentz and Workman), and, most importantly, might not be this good. It's also possible that he'll build on his success and become a quality big leaguer, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the Sox hedge their bets and acquire someone who fills more or a short-term need.
