I love Xander.
He can't get here soon enough. Remember when we were arguing about whether or not we should worry about him not displaying power for the first month of the year?
Woops.

Looking at the box scores tonight and all I can say is wow. The Red Sox have an entire MLB rotation in minors between Ranaudo, Webster, De La Rosa, Workman, Barnes, and Owens. Will they all workout? Probably not, but it's nice to dream.

Probably not, but it's nice to dream. They added a lot of potential behind that group in the last two drafts with Ball, Stankiewicz, Buttrey, Johnson, and Callahan. If they manage to develop one of these guys into an ace, this staff could be unstoppable down the road. I was thinking about making the drive down to Pawtucket to watch Xander one of these nights, and now Middlebrooks will be there too, added bonus.

A Snyder promotion would mean a 40-man move. Most likely (in my preferred order): DFA Wright DFA Bard (or put him on 60-day DL for oblique) DFA Beato DFA De La Torre DFA HassanI have to think these guys would fit on a 25 man for a lot of teams.

Pawtucket has an incredible array of talent right now. Xander, JBJ, WMB, Brentz, DeLaRosa, Workman. Will get Webster back soon. Maybe Ranaudo too. A bunch of veteran arms in the pen. Solid pros like Holt, Hassan, Sutton and Hazelbaker. They should dominate the IL in the 2nd half. Already 48-29.

The current Pawtucket roster almost reminds me of when I play OOTP Baseball in Commissioner mode.

That Pawtucket situation makes it pretty clear the Red Sox won't be trolling the waiver wire for retreads and vets to fill the 40 man. For the first time, the depth for both hitters and pitchers will come from the young guys. Someone like Carp/Snyder, who have both exceeded expections (mine at least) this year, will be fighting for a roster spot.
No more Pedro Beato or Sandy Rosario (or Eric Patterson) types on/off/on/off the roster. There just won't be the spots. When Barnes was ripping up Salem we figured he'd be up this September. May be the 10th SP on the depth chart in 2014, given the roster.

DSL Sox with a rare loss moving them to 16-5. As a whole, the season has been a mixed bag.
Hitting: Franklin Guzman (21 years old) is the only hitter over .250. Alexander Basabe has the second-highest average at .245, but he hasn't played since June 17.
Pitching: The pitching, led by Jimenez, Ramos, and (Carlos) Garcia, has been great. Garcia is tied for 3rd for Ks in the DSL w/ 26. Ramos has a 0.90 ERA and is 2nd in the DSL with a 0.60 WHIP. Only two pitchers on the DSL Red Sox have ERAs above 3.38. The combined WHIP for the pitching staff is 1.01, leading the next best team by a hefty margin.
Don't think there is a Xander/Margot-type like in the past couple years, but I would keep an eye on some of the above-mentioned pitchers.

I liked the Minnich pick at the time, given the money strategy. I don't think playing in the GCL this year is a good sign for him.

It'll be interesting to see how Margot does in Lowell as an 18 year old. Xander jumped from DSL to an .834 OPS at Greenville, at exactly the same age as Margot. Doubt we'll see that again for a while.

Xander Bogaerts homerun was clearly wind aided, the RF had a beat on it but ball just carried in the wind stream.(for those who have been to McCoy the right field flags above visiting bullpen where blowing out with alot of force behind them)

I have to wonder if the defense has been outstanding perhaps. Seems like they must be getting to a lot of ground balls in order to keep those WHIPs so low. Doesn't mean much if they don't hit, but there's another Iglesias out there somewhere.
