David Lennon ?@dplennon Told Red Sox not looking for closer, so doubtful they'd overpay for late-inning help, and #Mets aren't moving Parnell unless "blown away."

@jonmorosi: Sources: #Tigers and #RedSox have checked in with #SFGiants on bullpen arms in case SF decides to sell.
In a second tweet, he mentions old friend Javier Lopez, who has a ring from 2007.
(But I do think "news and rumors" would be a better title for the thread)

Looks like we've traded Brandon Jacobs to the other Sox for Matt Thornton. 36 but he's got good stats and we only really need him as a Miller replacement for this year. Linkage

The Rangers, Indians and Diamondbacks are among several teams in on the sweepstakes for Cubs right-hander Matt Garza, the clear No. 1 pitcher on the trade market, while the Red Sox are a team that's said to be thinking about it. A Boston-connected person, asked if they are in the derby, said “not as of yet.'' The suggestion is that perhaps their commitment to the fray may depend on the health of Clay Buchholz, the star starter with a neck issue who had his throwing session pushed back until Thursday. Bowden hears there's an 80 percent chance that Matt Garza will be traded before his next scheduled start (Monday or Tuesday of next week). The Rangers, Red Sox and Diamondbacks are still involved

Peavy will make his first start Saturday since he fractured his left rib June 4. With the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline approaching and the Cubs' Matt Garza reportedly close to being dealt, Peavy could be the next starting pitcher in line to be moved. Among the teams represented at Friday's game who could stay to take a look at Peavy were the Red Sox, Rangers, Diamondbacks, Blue Jays, Yankees, Orioles and Mariners. Of the teams in attendance, the Red Sox and Rangers have followed the Sox the longest. www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/ct-spt-0720-white-sox-braves-chicago-20130720,0,2856754.story

Peavy:Buster Olney ?@buster_ESPN 13m Boston has a scout at the CWS game today, presumably to watch Peavy and follow up on some of the background work they have done. Buster Olney ?@buster_ESPN 1h Red Sox are doing background work on Jake Peavy, who pitches against AT today. Arizona, SF, Colorado also in the discussions. Norris:Jerry Crasnick ?@jcrasnick 1h Some potential Norris fits: #sfgiants, #indians, #nationals, #dodgers, #redsox, #pirates, #rangers if they don't get Garza. Jerry Crasnick ?@jcrasnick 1h Things have been heating up with Bud Norris trade talks since All-Star break, say baseball execs. #astros K-Rod:Buster Olney ?@buster_ESPN 1h Francisco Rodriguez makes a lot of sense for BOS. www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodrifr03.shtml … Experienced as a closer, throwing effectively, fearless on the mound

Cafardo
We hear Red Sox prefer peavy over garza but remain active in talks on both. Much will hinge on buchholz second opinion with dr Andrews

Beat writers tweet that Clay given clean bill of health by Dr. Andrews; willing to throw with discomfort e.g. Brian MacPherson ?@brianmacp 4m Buchholz given, essentially, a clean bill of health. He'll resume his throwing program with the peace of mind the team wanted him to have.
