According to Jim Bowden (add grain of salt) Michael Cuddyer can be had if the Rockies are "blown away" by the offer. Cuddyer's right handed bat would look mighty fine in our five hole. He would slot in in left field but he can also play first and even third. As much as Nava and Gomes have contributed, Cuddyer constitutes a significant upgrade. At 10.5M$/yr through 2014, he's reasonably priced. Reportedly a great clubhouse guy too.
The package would have to include either Nava or Gomes to open up a roster spot. Gomes might do very well in the thin air. Then you have to start "blowing the Rockies away." What would that be, I wonder? Would Brentz and Britton be enough? It might take Renauldo or Barnes instead of Britton. Wilson, Johnson, and Workman could be in the mix. If I were Ben I'd think this one over carefully.

I've always liked Cuddyer. Besides first, third and left, he has played right and 2B and played well at all of them.

Yes, if I were running the Colorado team I would try to sell high on Cuddyer as well. I think being blown away here means being offered someone with a future. Cuddyer basically is a journeyman player, a very decent one, who is having a career year that probably won't last, and, almost certainly, will not be repeated.
I don't see him as a middle of the lineup hitter for the Sox. He would be preferable to Gomes because he is better in the field and can play more positions. However, he's not going to hit in the AL East like he is in the NL West. I wouldn't give up much to get him. I certainly wouldn't give up Ranaudo, Britton, Barnes, Johnson or Workman. Maybe Brentz and a low minor leaguer.

I'm not sure about Cuddyer. I'm in the camp that thinks we need another stick down he stretch but it could be Xander or WMBS or a rebirth of Naploi at first. I wonder if SD would like to get away from Quintens remaining two years for a package of Brentz or even Britton. Quinten in LF and Nava moving to first and backing up the OF corners. Napoli is starting to worry me.

So I agree there but I think you are a little harsh on your assessment on his abilities. He did play many years in the AL Central for the Twins and was rather productive. He annually had a OBP around .340 and in a fully healthy year he is generally around 20 HRs with an outlier peak year of 32. I think he would be a significant upgrade over Gomes. If you could get it done for Gomes, Britton and a A ball prospect like De La Cruz or one of the 40 man crunch players it could be considered but why would Colorado do that just 4.5 out now. Additionally I would rather see moving prospects for an arm over a bat if the team moves them. Problem is pickings are slim right now. It will be interesting to see in the next 10 games which teams decide to become sellers and who else may become available.

Not sure I'd give up a blue chipper for him but I'd consider dealing a guy like Brentz for him

Ouch. Maybe we could offer him up for Jesse Crain as a damaged goods swap?
Obviously, pitching is the priority now, so I find the Alex Rios rumors odd. I'd much rather have Cuddyer and I don't think the price would be all that different. Probably just the due diligence of kicking all the tires is being done, and perhaps Cuddyer is really not available.
