Trying to catch some "lightning" in a bottle? Interesting. Maybe Lyon has something left.

Lyon just got released by the Mets who are desperate for bullpen help... I don't see him being much more then AAA filler who you could possibly call up to be a whipping boy if the bullpen explodes. Contreras? ? wasn't he just pitching in the Iron League? for the Saskatoon Chalupas ... He's got to be like 50yrs old

I tried to get everyone on the Contreras bandwagon yesterday but got no takers. His numbers have been great in AAA since he came back from surgery. What's the worst that can happen?

Woohoo! Bullpen by committee! Bring back Grady Little!
Seriously, though, I don't think they're signed with Boston in mind, they're almost surely AAA filler to cover for the guys who do need to be in Boston.

I just take it as having injury insurance. Uehara, Tazawa, Breslow, Bailey, Thornton are as set into the pen as you can have at the moment. Unless fatigue takes out Tazawa (which could happen), there is very little chance either makes any sort of impact.

Derek Lowe is available, having recently retired. All kidding aside, I'm kind of glad Ben is trying this. You never know what will stick. I would think this is an open audition without having to make a quick detrimental trade to try to fix the bullpen.
Try out the retreads that might have a little something going for them - it seems Lyon struggled terribly the last few innings before he got released but was pitching OK before then and Contreras pitched poorly in another small sample size before he's been pitching lights out in the minors.
Doesn't hurt to audition these guys. I'm thinking with Buchholz out for however long (I almost expect to see a blurb that's he's out for the year the way things are going with him), I think the Sox will deal for a starter or sign Gonzalez and they'll stick Workman in the pen along with Britton and eventually De La Rosa and hope that if the veterans can't help them, then the kids can.
What a crazy year. Before the season began, the bullpen was considered the biggest strength of the team, and it's turned into a disaster area as two closers and a lefty who was finally getting it wind up out for the season.

i really liked Lyon his first time here. Will b kind of interesting to see if he can do anything. Of course I would much rather we didnt have so many bullpen injuries that they even thought of doing this.

Contreras looked pretty good in Durham last night. 4 ks and 2 bb in 1.2, throwing fb mostly 91, sometimes 92, off speed was 84. After the two bbs, pitching coach visit to mound and a final K on 84 mph offspeed pitch.
