Is there any idea when Myles Smith might pitch?

Coyle moves to rehab in Greenville. So his 2013 season is pretty much shot as far as a learning curve/hope for advancement for starting 2014 and betts has surpassed him now. Hope he doesn't turn into another Kalish/Daeges, with 2 severe injuries over the last 3 years.

Took in the GCL game today. Not a lot to report at all. No one stood out. Had a nice chat with Gabe Speier. California kid far from home. Sounds like he will be in Instructional League in September. Really nice young man. Talked awhile with Jon Denny's mom. Been in Florida for 5 days, flying back to Oklahoma tomorrow. They all speak well of the organization and how they are being treated. Longhi's swing looked long. He hit the 1st pitch on his first two at-bats and grounded out weakly both times. Met his HS coach. He thinks he is a better pitcher! HOT, HOT, HOT in Sarasota at 95.

Thanks for that Steve. Longhi is one have been looking at B/S every day on and seeing 0's except for 1 day, figured was something going on. Instructors have a lot to work on it looks like going forward. Amazing the GCL Sox are getting as many games in as they are. Noonish inland, we are getting T/storms daily.

Hope to see Webster follow up his last start with another strong one. Hard to forget in the spring when scouts were saying he had the best stuff they had seen in the spring.

I mean, he got in 145 at bats (and decent ones at least) at Salem, and has been hitting in the GCL for a few days. I don't think it's been a GOOD year for him, but one has to learn to deal with injury as well. Finding the two 2B playing time going forward could be a bit of a challenge.

Jerry Crasnick ?@jcrasnick 6m Ryan Rowland-Smith has decided not to exercise today's opt-out and will remain with #redsox AAA Pawtucket club.
Jerry Crasnick ?@jcrasnick 6m Rowland-Smith can opt out at any time if another club adds him to 25-man roster. He's 5-0 w/ 1.58 ERA in 45.2 IP with Pawsox.

Playing time forward, or starting in 2014 is basically what I meant with both now on the same track with Coyle's season pretty much wiped out. Shame, I was hyped on him after the draft, along with cecchini and he just seemed bitten by hitting/swing issues and this year, got off to the hot start, slumped and then went down for over a month. He's now on the same kind of cross path that Fed-X and Lavarnway were on as catchers, but doubt will see the tiny Coyle being a DH at Salem next season, nor Betts promoted to Portland with him only half a season at Salem himself. They could move one of them, or the team even move one to the OF even possibly perhaps. Hope neither is yet relegated to Ryan Dent/Derrik Gibson status as a "floater" around the various teams.

Dan Butler, 2/3, 2B, HR, HBP; up to .283 / .380 / .513.
.193 / .313 / .321 (128 PA) -- Butler through June 5. .368 / .444 / .692 (135 PA) -- Butler since.
The latter breaks down:
.394 / .447 / .727 (38 PA) -- 9 games through June 26 .225 / .340 / .350 (47 PA) -- 13 games from June 27 to July 18 .477 / .540 / .977 (50 PA) -- 12 games since.
So the great overall line has been accomplished by being not very good 2/3 of the time and preposterously good 1/3.

WMB's HR tonight was off Wang. He used to be tough to hit them against with that sinker. Maybe, this gets Wil going.

I wonder if that's as streaky as his overall performance. If we're not going to platoon Lavarnway with Salty. Is Butler a better option?

Or you can say one he started playing regularly he start to hit, had a dry period, which is not unusual, and then rebounded to his present situation. not bad he hits well 21 games out of 34. Stats do not lie just people play with them. But hey. Let's see what he does in the next couple of weeks. Just saying.

Perhaps he has periods where he's taking the plate discipline issue too extreme and he's better off being aggressive.

Old friend Jeff Wendelken with his first save in the WS system. Impressive 3 IP, 2H, 0R, 7Ks.

I feel that Butler would be a better option for the big club than Lavarnway due to his superior defense and right now the argument can be made that he has more pop in his bat than Lava
